Spending a Night “Homeless” on the streets of Hungary

The best stories and lessons are unplanned.

Any trip or a holiday creates numerous memories, memorable anecdotes and photographs. But travel stories are created when your best laid plans go haywire. All good stories start with an element of the “unexpected” – getting lost in a city, taking a wrong train and arriving somewhere else altogether, missed connections, getting deported are a few of such unexpected elements and I am sure you get my drift. My travels are self-planned budget trips and despite a lot of research there have been many occasions wherein all that could go wrong has gone wrong and in return many memorable stories created. But my favorite so far is being “Homeless in Hungary”.

I’m a Stranger here to place called Earth

ImageI imagine no one will believe me when I say I met an alien from another planet sitting in Starbucks. It could have been a dream or was it?

A tennis goddess, asked to sit at my table and wanted to talk to me.  I looked around for a news crew or hidden camera.

Who me? (me)

Yes you, you have been chosen because of your superior intelligence and good looks to answer our questions. (goddess)

Cough, sputter, pffft. Please no jokes when I’m drinking coffee, I choked on my latte! I had to extend my line of credit for that! (me)

Yeah, right, Okay – it was a random draw and it seems like you just sit around drinking coffee all day anyway. Besides no one will believe you anyway if you say you met an alien that looks like Maria Sharapova.

Hey! a little respect eh? Why do you look like a gorgeous tennis star and not some tentacled thing from Schwarzenegger jungle epic?

We clean up for field trips. Never mind anyway. We want to understand this Donald Trump presidential candidate, it confuses the cosmos. Is it some kind of homo sapiens humor?

No, well maybe.

Alright,  what are his qualifications? military service? Political experience? Corporate leadership? Pure motives?

Cough, sputter, pffft. Please no jokes when I’m drinking coffee, I asked you.  Donny boy has no experience in military like Theodore Roosevelt, or any political experience neither. He is a humble boy and is willing to start at the top, all humility that DT. No corporate whiz really, he came from his daddy’s riches and bought and sold real estate in New York City and made money like anyone and everyone did in real estate in New York City. He did try the casino business and became the only one ever to lose money at that and go bankrupt, letting the smaller businesses take his overspending fall. Motives?  Only The Shadow knows, but this is a big first job for The Apprentice.

But such a nation like the USA would only let the best and brightest lead and especially take the top post right?

Cough, sputter, pffft. I asked you before no jokes when I’m drinking coffee. I imagine Lincolns, and Roosevelts are in short supply now and now it takes billions of dollars to buy, I mean seek election.  No worries, Donald won’t be spending his own exaggerated assets, he would only take gifts of aircraft carrier sized rooms of cash from arms length persons who expect nothing in return.

Cough, sputter, pffft – now who is joking! you did that on purpose! I passed dark roast up my nostrils!

Go back to your saucer ET, I have no answers for you. All I can say is that watching Donald Trump pretend to be a worthy candidate for the USA presidency is like the biggest daytime show of The Price is Right I’ve ever seen.

My daytime daze ended and there I sat, cold latte and all – was it a dream?

Thanks for reading my little attempt at humor, I hope you liked it. Comments and feedback always welcome.

The biggest waste of all

You think you know a big waste right? how about gift cards, A billion dollars (yes the B word with illion on the end) every year go unused. That information is available if you open this LINK .

That is a waste, but is it the biggest waste of all?

The other day I was reading another blog and he mentioned a Peanuts cartoon, so I lodieoked for it.

Charlie Brown is thinking about death, and is inert.

Snoopy however is thinking about all the ways to enjoy life.

One of my favorites posts in the favorites category on my blog has to do with the 5 regrets in life.  You can see it here.

I think I need to spend more of my life being active, not wishing I was on a trip, planning that trip; not remembering some good stories of my life – creating some new ones.

A few years at this time of year I was standing in a snowstorm starting a 3 month long running clinic. Every Saturday for three months I ran, jogged and met with others planning to do the Sun Run in Vancouver, BC.  Twice a week I ran solo and had to make sure I did or I would lag behind on the grsunrun_art_299x392oup run. Looking back I’m pretty happy about the whole experience and that I had the discipline to run in a snow storm and do all those solo runs.

If I want to look back and be glad about more challenges, and feel good about doing my best – then it is up to me.

I suppose the biggest waste of all would be to not enjoy the one life we are each given. To not hug the ones we love, our parents, our spouses, our sons and daughters, our best friends EVERY time we see them, and to hug them long distance regularly so they know know know you love them. The biggest waste of all is to wait too long to live.

I need a mantra every morning along the lines of

Today I will not waste, Today I am alive, so I am going to live, and plan to live again tomorrow.

Best Advice I’ve ever received

Having a grateful attitude is perhaps the way to happiness and contentment. Enjoy the visual poetry that is this beautiful Ted video, the creator put so much effort into making it, please enjoy it in full.

I received this advice in the crowd, listening to a father’s day sermon. By the way, I think I am repeating myself but it was really impactful, and how many sermons do you remember?

Seriously, the message was about being “thankful” and it underlined to me to choose this attitude for myself. I try hard to choose this frame of mind and keeps me from wishing more of this and that.

Best advice, before complaining, Count your blessings first, and then see how you feel.

Thanks to a very good friend, I learned of an amazing video yesterday called Gratitude.

It is an amazing and inspirational message, about the revealment of happiness  and I hope you will watch it, and comment. Watch a few minutes to see what I mean, especially after minute 4:17 and onward. 🙂

Thank you for visiting my blog, Take care.

Call Me Skywalker #2

view from cape foul weather I think

To read Call Me Skywalker from the beginning click HERE

Stella died a month ago.  Luke’s mind still saw her face easily, picturing her laughing and singing along with the Beatles.  He half smiled, and his eyes twinkled remembering how she always seemed to be singing a song or pieces of a song during the day.

Stella loved to infect him with a melody of song so after he sat with her, laughed with her, the rest of his day had these earworms of pop music popping up.

Luke chuckled, one week she kept singing “Bennie and the Jets” and he walked around singing Bennie, Bennie, Bennie and the Jets all week. He smiled but there was a tear in his eye.

Luke was doing better now.  After the funeral he had felt dazed, his face felt numb and it almost seemed like he had his face pressed against a window looking in on the world because he felt detached.

Today it was a month.  Stella had given him a letter only to be opened after a month after her death. Luke turned the envelope over in his hand, her handwriting on the outside, his name, and a little smiley face. Oh how he missed her laugh, her song snippets. His lungs felt parched, and his throat dry. Time to open it.

Dear Skywalker, thank you for all the loving and laughter you gave me. (Luke nodded, his eyes were watering, his inner voice – thank you, thank you)  I have flown the coop just like we expected and I know the last month has been difficult for you,  but you never complained.  There are times we need to just “Hold On” (just like the Dan Hill song remember?)  and times to let loose and set free.  I know you will be alright. My daughter was deployed and she will be upset she could not be there when I was in the hospice.  Will you be with her for me please?  Sophie is a beautiful girl and I didn’t want to be in her way when she told me of her submarine assignment. Be there for me please, Share the laughter we had together the last months with Sophie,  hold her hand like you held mine.

always hugs, Stella

Paper in hand, envelope torn on the floor, he sat still and reread the note. Sophie.  I can be there for her for Stella. Poor Sophie, coming home and her Mom gone. The address is there, and I will go there and put a note in her mailbox to contact me about her Mom. I don’t know what to say but I will do it.

Luke on assignment felt better and a Beatles snippet came in his mind as he wrote his note to Sophie for delivery and sealed it in an envelope.

Bright are the stars that shine
Dark is the sky
I know this love of mine
Will never die
And I love her

Call me Skywalker

God’s providence or karma brought them together – it changed both their lives.

He was just graduated from nursing school,  and turned 25 years old. Excited to be starting his new job at a hospice, he moved to a whole new city to start his career. The first day on the job he met Stella.

Stella was 83,  and she found the days long, dark and lonely at the hospice.  She was looking out the window at the rain, when her new caregiver came to bring her breakfast at 7:30 a.m.

Good morning Stella, my name is Luke but please call me Skywalker. Today is my first day and I will be your caregiver. How are you today?

He looked deep into Stella’s eyes and for the first time in weeks she felt like she was in the centre of someone’s attention, and not somewhere out on the edge.

Stella looked into his eyes – If I can call you Skywalker , you can call me Star. Tell me about yourself.

So he did. He opened up like a burst dam in the middle of rainstorm.

Skywalker talked about his collection of glass slugs, his love of science fiction old movies,  his sweet tooth, his favorite tea (peppermint) and how he became a nurse.

Star soaked it all in, all the stories and felt like a girl on a first date memorizing all Skywalker’s stories. The best part though was that Skywalker was looking at her the whole time and she knew that he wanted to hear her favorite things, and was really interested in the telling.

So the telling, and the sharing began and flowed. She talked about working on a freighter, her favorite holidays, her collection of bookmarks, and her love of old science fiction movies.

Hours became days, and they were as comfortable together as a flannel shirt and jeans. Relaxed and naturally warm together they were, they brightened up the autumn days that grew darker for themselves and warmed everyone  they met.

Unspoken was the understanding that Stella was not going home. The blood pressure checks, and the gradually increasing pain relief through her IV were a constant overshadowing but still the closeness developed between Skywalker and Stella.

They enjoyed a gift of invisible sunlight days but the clouds beckoned and finally Star felt the weakness bone deep and waved Skywalker to sit beside her.

A feeling of dread gripped his heart as he pulled a stool close, and held her bony fingers in his warm pink hands.

Almost a whisper she spoke – Luke,  I love you. Thank you for taking care of me, the last few weeks have been wonderful getting to know you.

Almost a whisper and his eyes wet with tears – Star, I love you too. Thank you for being my first patient. I will never, never ever, forget you and our talks together.

Nothing else was said. Luke stayed there and held Stella’s hands as her eyelids closed and she slept for the last time.

Sweet dreams Star.
