What’s your Go To? (I’m Thinking Aloud again)

Thank you for visiting my blog today, I appreciate your precious time as add to my category I call “Thinking Out Loud”

Just a little bloggers warning here = I plan to sprinkle this post with Texas wisdom. (you might groan)

Everyone knows that Texas quips make you happy enough to exclaim “well butter my butt and call me a biscuit!” (lol)

Due to schedules, careers, fires of all types that need to be put out – sometimes getting together with friends is as difficult as putting socks on a rooster.

As a result when I had a special day and reconnected with friends we have missed seeing in the flesh for a few years ; it was especially appreciated to see them and give them hugs.

Now I realize that I missed some opportunities to visit and I have been a few pickles short of barrel by not doing so.

These friends regularly “check in” with us and I love that characteristic of special friends. They have kept in touch and been supportive all through covid and especially when I was on dialysis again back in 2018 and during the recovery time from my transplant surgery in 2019. They are outstanding.

I realized that with some friendships, if we are fortunate, time and distance, don’t diminish the connection.

I know that to lose any of my long time friends would be a regret of mine if it happened.

I recall how awesome it was to get together with friends for a big party for my 60th birthday; they lifted me up as I had just began dialysis again after my 2nd transplant had failed. That they came was the best gift of all.

Losing friends, I conclude is as welcome as a porcupine at a nudist colony.

As we drove away after our dinner with friends; I felt full but not from the food but from the time that I had just spent with them.

I was just as Happy as a boarding house pup.

My wish for my readers is to keep your connections strong – I think a common regret is losing contact with people who have touched our heart in the past. I hope it is a regret we will all avoid – David

I really enjoy the humor and educational value of the youtuber Vinh Giang and so I wanted to add what I thought of when I watched a recent youtube of his called”menu items”.

Vinh calls them “Menu Items” – link here

I call them “Go To’s” – what it refers to is the activities that allow you to take a breath from a busy life whether it’s career or Life.

These are the things that allow you to think clearly and step back – to “reboot” if you will.

I remember when I used to jog, that hour of slow running became a pleasure once I pushed past the 9th minute. It did something for me; in those days it was a “Go To” even though I didn’t call it that. (I wonder if it was the oxygen or interactions of all the muscles (bilateral stimulation maybe – sounds techy) or perhaps it was the endorphins?

How do you reset? refresh?

I don’t know if it’s juggling, doing puzzles, a pedicure, or hugging someone you love but I hope you give yourself time now and then as a gift. (the best “take out♥)

I suspect my suggestion to take a break occasionally may be as welcome as an outhouse breeze.

Remember, if it’s on your menu, it’s because you love it, and you know you will love it again.

New flowers continue to arrive and I think they are called flowers because when people see them – they beam!

Always great to hear you are well and keeping safe from the fires. I’m safe as well and me and my Kidney are good. So is Karen and the rest of the family. Waiting to get my Covid 19 (21?) shot.

It’s a long way from Canada to Texas, but you seem to have covered the distance with humor, bless your heart! 😉 Your sunflower picture is beautiful. Looking at nature, or even better, being in nature is what your friend would call a menu item for me–so relaxing.

Thanks Linda, you gave me smile ! The sunflowers are so amazing this year, and I love how they attract first the bees and later the little birds for the seeds. There is nothing like the simple things in life, fresh air, nature, a tall cool glass of clean water, and of course taking a long slow relaxing breathe. Thank you sincerely for your comment! = David

  9. I like the Texas wisdom…and you’re so right about maintaining contact with friends. My go-to is spending time with my 1-and 3-year-old granddaughters. They make me forget all adult worries and allow me to enjoy the moment.

Hi Debra, my grandson just turned ONE, and I see him most days of the week for a little visit. He calls me Pop pop♥ I think he has doubled in weight and now I get a real workout lifting him up. I agree that that those moments and their smiles are priceless. – David

It always seems to me that your comments are beaming (or is it your smile?) I appreciate the kind words. It’s a lovely time of the year here in the Valley, warm day weather (80 degrees F) but it drops down at night to a nice 56. We had a big rockslide on the highway, causing all kinds of trouble for folks with highway closed. It’s been over a week now but maybe in another week or so they will have a wall to protect a single line and long delays instead of three hour detours. I am not complaining, just reporting btw. I saw there were floods in Hongkong and washouts in Greece and so not feeling sorry for myself either. It keeps Sue from going to Costco so I just hope that business will survive. 🙂 Blessings to you and hugs – Dave

I love the homespun sayings! We had some of those in Alberta too. As dad used to say, “See you in the funny papers.”
