Grasping for the Answer

Africa is a cat who works hard every day, it just doesn”t show. Now she is exhausted.

Thank you for your interest in my blog.

Today I have a question and I need your help to know the answer.

I know you have other things to do in your life

besides reading blog posts.  I am worrying that I might lose your interest in my blog if I am posting too often.

Right now I try not to blog every day, I often take weekends off and don’t blog every day between Monday to Friday.

***************************************************************

There are a few reasons I don’t blog every day.

I hope that when you see I have written a new post; I am hopeful that your reaction is:

  • Cool (or something similar) – what’s it about? followed by click, read, comment (and maybe even share) – Okay maybe that’s reaching? I’m not J.R.R. Tolkien.

I hope you are not thinking :

  • What already?  Too much already! Doesn’t he have a life? I sure do! followed by unsubscribe or assigning to SPAM.

Here is my question:

HOW MANY BLOG POSTS Maximum A WEEK from “Life and Random Thinking” is your preference?

I am relying on comments from the kind people who read this blog for the direction and answer I am looking for. – David ♥

  1. The duck is a cutie. 🙂

I usually post two or three times a week, but right now I am reblogging Stuart Aken’s photo project, so a post is arriving on my blog every day. I don’t think it makes a lot of difference. I follow several bloggers who post every day, and I don’t find them over-exposed.

  2. Good question, David. I’ve wondered, myself, how much is too much. (My posts tend to run long, so I figure monthly is the most I dare post.) How about weekly? That way you stay in touch, and can pick one theme that your week has revealed. :)) Hugs to you :)) Dawn

It’s your blog, post whenever you want. I read blogs where there’s only one post per week and others where there are multiple short posts and/or photos every day.

  4. I enjoy reading your posts, so I’m good with once a day. I don’t have a schedule myself for posting. Sometimes my muse is wide awake and I post every day for a while; sometimes my muse is on vacation and I struggle for something valuable and interesting to write about. I selfishly started blogging as a way to release my words into the universe so I’ve never looked at what my readers should get out of it!

I tend to agree that one a day is maximum. My muse comes out of nowhere sometimes so I make a note as I usually in the middle of something. I think you are being too critical on yourself, your writing and thoughts are welcome! – David

  5. Hi. I think you should publish however many essays you want to. It’s up to each reader to determine how often they will look at your essays. Over time, you can always increase or decrease the frequency as you see fit.

That is freeing if I do that. Fortunately for kind readers like yourself I have to get out and do my other activities, exercise and volunteering. I don’t want to wear out my welcome per se. – Take care, David

  6. How about you write when you feel the need or want? Mostly, for me, it serves an individual purpose in terms of mental space, physical time, all that stuff. I don’t pressure myself to think ‘oh I haven’t blogged today, better come up with some drivel’. The drivel comes regardless of what I said, or didn’t, already on the blog. 🙂

I try to read the people I enjoy regularly. Sometimes, this means I read several posts from one blogger in one sitting, instead of each day when he or she posted. It depends on my time availability.

You’re good at story telling. Don’t worry about when, or how much. Get the words out when you feel like it. Sooner or later, people will come to read. I know I will.

I think I am already writing when I feel I have something to share, I don’t feel compelled to keep a schedule. When I was depressed in 2018 after resuming dialysis I found it hard to write partially because I felt dishonest if I acted all upbeat but I didn’t want sympathy either.

I especially try to read the posts I enjoy like yours, and most of them like you have a quiet humor that slips in. That is nice. I also like to find new bloggers to encourage. Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate them. – David

  7. I wanted to add, I’ve been having some issues with WP recently. Sometimes I like a post and it disappears (the liked part). I don’t know why it does that. This morning I wondered why I hadn’t seen any posts from this one blogger I enjoy, thinking he was sick or absent or something. Turns out he’s been posting all along but somehow WP unfollowed me from him.

Don’t trust your stats completely. WP sometimes has a mind of its own with the whole stats thing…and some people lurk. My mom reads not just my blog, but some of the bloggers who comment on my blog. She never ever clicks like or comments. She is a lurker. But she reads…she won’t show up on any stats, but when we talk in person, she mentions things she enjoyed.

See? You can’t trust the stats. 🙂

Interesting question, David. It depends on whether you’re blogging for yourself or whether building an audience is most important. Short and frequent seems to attract more readers, but that’s not a scientific fact. I know my sons don’t read all my posts when there are too many of them! If you’re blogging for yourself and have something to say, then go for it! But having a gap of a few days shouldn’t be a concern either. Mostly, you should be having fun!

I am really blogging for myself Jane but I would stop if I didn’t have an audience. I find some friends and family are readers but they infrequently comment so I never really know. I think I would stop if I felt there was no interest, it was all an experiment to begin with, a learning opportunity to see how I was at writing. My cousin has just written a book, I think I will ask him about it today – David

Well, it seems to me that you have plenty to say, and you say it well. It’s good practice for writing even if you decide to start a bigger project. I stopped blogging once for about 18 months because I felt like I was addicted to it. But I missed it and I glad I came back to it. You can always take a break if/when you feel like it.

  9. I generally think that 3 to 5 is a good number for me to write, but I haven’t been very successful at that lately. I think life has seemed so overwhelming since the coronapocalypse kicked off, and I don’t want to sound too whiny. I enjoy seeing your posts because I love your perspective on life, so whatever you settle on, I will be glad to see posts from you

I have not been following very long and am going through a personal email crisis, so I am not sure I am the best one to respond. I find that if I miss even one day of checking email, I am very behind. If I miss several, I just have to delete many and move on. That is hard for me because I know bloggers put a lot of themselves into their posts and usually have something interesting to share. So, at this point I don’t feel overwhelmed by your emails in particular; keep on keeping on.🙂

Post what’s in your heart. It doesn’t matter what or how often, or even who. I thought to have a pattern of posting too, but that had a mind of its own. Now I post when I’m inspired.

Like you I look for inspiration before I post. I am posting because I want to write. No money being made on my post. LOL I suppose that’s why I have so many categories, and why this year I added a couple more. Often someone says something and that sparks a memory and I want to say something about my life, or what I am learning.

I think you can post whenever it feels right, David. I disappear from social media for days or weeks at a time depending on my health. I follow people who post every day to those who only post a few times a year. Your posts are always lovely and welcome. More cats please!!!!

  14. I don’t think how many times a blogger posts is an issue. I know a couple who post many times in a day (okay that might be a bit much). It’s more about the quality and interest you bring to what you’re posting. I tend to just post 2-3 times a week because that’s what I can do an maintain my interest in doing the work to post well.

Thanks Andrew. A few times a day on a regular basis would turn me off after awhile. I hope that I bring quality and interest to my blog. I try to blog when I feel I have something to share and sometimes ideas come in spurts. Also sometimes life intervenes and my blog goes by the way. I also follow a number of bloggers like you that I feel connected and that takes time to read their blogs. Sometimes I don’t have to comment. Enjoy what you share, your humor and your projects. – David

  15. I would want to post every day but if I have the motivation I don’t have the time, if I have the time I don’t have the motivation, or so it seems.
I say do what it feels right for you. If you like writing do it as often as it brings you joy.
    Blessings! ♥♥

  16. This is a tough call, because we’re all at different points in our lives, so it comes down to following your instincts. I only post once a week because blogging is just one part of my writing life. I also subscribe to nearly 100 blogs (most in a weekly digest format), so the best I can do is to scan the first few lines of frequent bloggers. But for you, maybe 2 or 3 times as week?

  17. I am probably not one to advise you as I am very inconsistent with my postings, considering my dog’s post has ended and she gets more views. I am striving for twice a week. If you have something to say then go ahead and say it. That is what we all want, to talk and trade ideas and views. Love your cat and you are right the duck does seem to want in on the conversation.

  18. David I think you are on the right track. Writing as you are inspired. Unless you are trying to build a large audience, and frankly, I have no ideas about that as mine is minuscule, lol. I have been so behind on both reading blogs and writing my own posts, I’m lucky to post once a month and read once a week. Personally, I enjoy your posts, just takes me a while to get to them. But if I were not feeling bogged down by all the unease in the world, I would prefer to write a couple of posts a week, just make them the best I could and spend a fair amount of time composing and proofing and revising them to near perfection. That is just me though. Hope that helps. Keep writing. Stay well.

I think you should post however many times you feel like posting. Sometimes, because my work is crazy, I am not able to post for a week or more. I miss it. I think posting is an outlet in a lot of ways. If you feel compelled to share then I say do it. It is you and what you feel. I love all of your posts. I don’t always get to read everyday but I usually catch up at least once a week and I truly enjoy. I am glad I got to know you through blogging. Have a wonderful day my friend.

I was scrolling back through your posts and happened to alight on this one, David. I think the answer is whatever suits you. I don’t find writing them hard but keeping up with reading everyone else is impossible, so you really have to please yourself. If you’re happy, then that’s job done, isn’t it? 🙂 🙂 (I liked your walk in the rhododendrons)
