The Best Investments you will ever make

Hi, my name is David.

Welcome to “Life and Random Thinking“.  Today’s blog post is another of my “Thinking Out Loud” category.

I appreciate you stopping by. ♥

Getting to the top is hard but it’s the challenges that make life the most rewarding!

Today I went for a walk early,

it will be 38 C degrees today (100.4 F) so I really should have been out earlier than I was as it was already 24 C when we were walking.

I had a wonderful and healthy time, it was a walk with my son, and another deposit in the bank of memories we share.

Dave said he could feel the snake muscles

When I die, and I am optimistic that it is not soon,

all that will be left will be the stories.

The stories of time spent hiking, playing monopoly, teaching my kids to ride their bikes, holidays together, lessons learned through mistakes and more.

The best investment I can make is in that bank of stories, and experiences with the people in my life, especially my family.  Those are the only investments that will survive.

******************************************************

Checking my memories

bank account today, I evaluated my investments.

Many of my most valued investments weren’t expensive:

  • Carving pumpkins on the sundeck for Halloween,
  • and making snowmen in the front yard with my son and daughter,
  • watching a thunderstorm with my daughter,
  • riding a merry go round with my wife
  • learning to make a balsa wood kite with my Dad
  • playing crib with my Mom.

******************************************************

Financial advisors will tell you don’t make the mistake of waiting for the “best time to invest“. They will say that by waiting you are missing out on “potential returns in the meantime.”

They are right about that.

Good news ! The best investments for stories don’t have to be expensive,  water skiing, camp fires, roasting marshmallows – you know what I mean.

Simpler is easier and just as meaningful.

I know that at my stage of life I know what I want is to invest and keep investing in the memories bank, and regardless of how much money you have; you can invest also.

Invest in walks, talks, card games, bike rides, and please say the words you feel in your heart to the ones who will inherit your stories. – Hugs ! David

I would love to hear some of the simple and wonderful ways you have invested in your Memories Bank. – hint hint. ♥♥♥

I am not sure about picking up snakes. I had a friend who thought it was a good idea until it bit him – it was not nice as he suffered badly.

You’ve nailed it, David. What we leave are the stories we are making with those we care about. Nicely said.

Thank you Jane. It was prompted by a phrase I heard on tv. One person had a disagreement with another and said we have too much good in the bank not to get past this. It made me think about banks other than financial. Thanks for your encouraging comments! – David

  6. You’ve hit on something really important, Dave. I think the best legacy we leave behind are the memories we created and how we made people feel as they share them.

  7. Recently, when people ask me what I “want” as a gift for an occasion, my answer has repeatedly been, “I want an experience that has memories”. I’ve reached that age where tangible things that I need (and most that I want) are purchasable, and when I need/want it, I need/want it NOW! With the pandemic and the process of aging, the idea of a fun and different time doing something with loved ones has much more meaning to be – plus they create memories to look back on with those loved ones! I think it’s awesome that you and your adult son still spend time together like you do!

We are so on the same page. I have also developed the perspective that things as opposed to experiences are less important. This morning we are investigating glamping on the sunshine coast. I have never done it, still researching as it involves a day driving a ferry etc but it has the potential to be a wonderful memorable family get away. – David Soon as it cools down my son and I will ride Myra Canyon – 23 trestles and it will be fun. –

  8. That are most certainly the best investments one can make. Each memory can be safely treasured within the confines of our hearts. Those memories will tide us over difficult times like these.

  9. My son and I play Euro games, rather complicated board games, I don’t win very much but it is time spent with him that I wouldn’t give up for the world. My husband and I watch a certain tv show every monday, like a standing date. While my daughter lives 5 hours away, we talk on the phone a lot and it helps me not miss her so much.

Congratulations. Those traditions are special, and valuable moments. They may seem small like a photograph taken yesterday but in decades, looking back, they are priceless! Bless you

It was just a small snake and my son knew it wasn’t a rattler and he didn’t want it to be ridden over by bikes on the path. The big gopher snakes or rattlers he won’t pick up. Funnily it is the snakes, the flat tires, getting caught in the rain moments that we recall, and not just the cake and monopoly times. – Thank you dearly for your interest in my blog and letting me know what you liked. – David

What a beautiful post! It is true, the best things in life are free and our most precious accounts are the accounts of golden memories! Some beautiful memories can also be made alone- a solitary walk in the rain may sound terrible to others but to me it is a memory of bliss and serenity.
