Thank You AND Recognition Is Never Ever Unappreciated

This article is from Inc.com.  It is written for employers but you and I can both see that the application is for everyday as well.

Even if doing the dishes is your “job”, or cutting the grass, or taking out the garbage. It is nice to be appreciated, and recognized. Not only nice, I would say it is essential.  Did you catch that word? Essential means “absolutely necessary“.

Have a smile ready, and thank you with customized 8 word statement to someone. I would love to hear feedback on this. I know a few years back I thanked my physician for being my physician for the last 20 years. It was heartwarming to me as I saw it was unexpected, why was it so?

PLEASE Let me hear your experience  with this – thank those people around you and let them know HOW they make your life easier, simpler, or how you feel because they are there. I would love to hear your comments.

Enjoy the article!

How to Thank Your Employees in Only 8 Words | Inc.com

The other day I was given the challenge to recognize 30 people by writing each one of them a note, which got me thinking about the amazing implications of recognizing employee’s contributions. It shows you are paying attention. It shows you care. It makes people feel valued. And as business guru Tom Peters notes, “People don’t forget kindness.”

The analytical readers among you are already thinking this article is entirely too touchy-feely, so let me add that there is also a self-serving aspect of thanking people. When you recognize the contributions of others, you reinforce the kind of behavior you want to see again. People who feel their efforts are noticed, and their work makes a difference, are more likely to go the extra mile in the future. Leadership is about empowering others to realize their own abilities. Communicate your belief in your people, and watch them rise to meet your expectations.

Some of you are now thinking, ‘How am I supposed to find the time to write personal notes when I have [insert important obligations]?’ Well, I can show you how to thank someone appropriately in eight words or fewer. You can do that. Also, you don’t want to be that boss who has her assistant order flowers once a year on each employee’s birthday. Save your money. Everybody knows someone else did it for you.

When you thank your employees, be prompt. Recognize the kind of effort you want to see again soon. And be spontaneous. Don’t wait for a holiday or company-wide event to thank your employees. Of course, be specific, too.

Our research at Emergenetics indicates that most employees would enjoy a personal thank-you note, but they want it customized to them. For example, to say, ‘You’re doing a good job,’ is fine for a “social” thinker, but a “structural” thinker doesn’t trust you unless you add a specific task he has accomplished.

So how can you most effectively thank and recognize your employees, based on their individual personalities and traits?

Here are 10 tips, according to brain research:

1. People who are at the gregarious end of the “expressiveness” spectrum use their gift of gab as a work asset. You might write to them: ‘I celebrate how you share your enthusiasm,’ or ‘Thanks for keeping the lines of communication open.’

2. People who are on the quieter end of the “expressiveness” spectrum appreciate one-on-one contact with you. You could say: ‘Mary, I prize your well-considered solutions,’ or ‘I appreciate your respectful attitude toward everyone.’

3. Those employees who are forceful in terms of “assertiveness” especially appreciate the prompt response from you. You could let them know: ‘Thank you for keeping the momentum going!’ or ‘I appreciate your decisive action.’

4. But those who are more easygoing when it comes to “assertiveness” want everyone to get along. You might say: ‘Thank you for helping to keep the peace,’ or, ‘I appreciate your amiability more than you know.’

5. When it comes to “flexibility,” staffers who are change-seekers don’t get flustered easily. You might write: ‘I recognize your easy resilience’ or ‘Thanks for how you handled [difficult client].’

6. On the other end of the “flexibility” spectrum is people who are focused and have strong opinions. You might jot down: ‘I depend on your support,’ or ‘I honor you for your convictions.’

7. Analytical thinkers value intelligence and individual, rather than team, recognition. To them, you might note: ‘I appreciate your penetrating questions,’ or ‘I respect the depth of your knowledge.’

8. Structural-minded folks want to hear details. You could let them know: ‘Thank you for transferring all that data perfectly,’ or ‘You always meet your deadlines–impressive!’

9. Since social thinkers want to please you, you ought to write them: ‘I am so grateful for your teambuilding skills,’ or, ‘I couldn’t have done it without you.’

10. Those on your team who are conceptual by nature want to feel unique. You could let them know: ‘Your solution to the XYZ problem was stunning,’ or ‘I treasure your creative long-term views.’

The power of sincere thanks cannot be overestimated.

Standing Out or Outstanding!

Some people see more in a walk around the block than others see in a trip around the world.-source unknown

This was an week where my health affected me so I could not walk very well and missed going to work. It has been much worse at other times but mostly I was restricted this week.  Fortunately my work will wait, and I did get some medications later this week and thankfully am feeling better and am again mobile.

I want to share what happened on Tuesday because it stood out in my mind as special.  As I sat in the hospital on Tuesday morning waiting my turn for a blood test I heard a boisterous, friendly, welcoming voice ring out ” Hey Buddy!”

It wasn’t for me. It was for a thin man who was driving a small red motorized cart, he had an orange flag on it so I suspect he uses it to go everywhere (it’s a small town). The voice of welcome, and the smile that shone out with it was from …. the cleaning lady.  She was outstanding in her friendship to this gentlemen.

I could almost see her welcoming voice settling down around him like a blanket and then she followed it up with chatting and more talk. I gathered from the crumbs of conversation that I overheard that she hadn’t seen him around the hospital for awhile, and he has been a frequent guest.

I was touched by her warmth to this man who she likely befriended during one of his visits.   She stood out to me because of her character, and I admired her.

As a person who is known on sight at hospital laboratory, and pharmacy I have frequently appreciated the people like this special lady who bring more to what they do.  I am convinced this gifting this woman gave to this gentleman was just part of her character and that is a generous giver of encouragement, friendship, and smiles.

The reason I love this city is because of the people like this lady who I have never spoken to.   I like to believe this is a special place with angels walking amongst us; fanciful certainly but it makes me smile.

Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves. ~James Matthew Barrie

She spread smiles and warmth that cleaning lady;  and it inspired me.

Oh yes, this week has been full of inspiration. I heard Philip Yancey on the radio. I had to figure out who it was because all I heard was about an accident where he nearly died ,and was close to death possibly. He realized everything on his mind boiled down to just three things. He said they were:

  1. the people he loves
  2. what did he achieve in his life
  3. what happens next (afterlife).

I think we all realize if we were lying on a bed with a broken neck; then our entire perspective would be different. We wouldn’t any longer  be worried about what car we drove, or how much was in our bank account. We would only be thinking about seeing the ones we love, and possibly wishing we had done things a bit differently.  Maybe thinking about #3.

You likely have thought these things yourself.  You have looked around you at the persons who love you, the friends you visit you when you are sick, and appreciated them silently.

Perhaps you are like me and sometimes think about your life.  Trips you still like to take, places you would like to see, people I want to show more appreciation to,  walks and evening breezes you want to experience.  I think it is called “taking stock”, always a healthy action.

I encourage myself and you to be retrospective sometimes. Count your blessings and then start something.  What can you do different? What is holding you back from making your life a little bit better, that you will look back on in 12 months and say – it was a small change but it added up to something really special, encouraging, and outstanding.

This blog is one of those things. I wanted to try something, make it fun but make it meaningful.

If you like my blog. I am pleased and glad. If you recommend it, or subscribe then I am honored. Thank you for your encouragement.

Friends are precious

Friends are precious. They laugh at your jokes, even when it isn’t that funny and laughter is important; life and your health should always include lots of smiles and laughter.

I consider myself very fortunate to have friends that put up with my sense of humor. In Canada, our money is in Canadian dollars; spelled the same as the American dollar.

The Canadian dollar is no longer a paper bill but a coin with bird on it, A loon. When Canadians talk about dollars we often refer to the coins  as “loonies“.

Canadian dollar – a loonie
Canadian bird called A Loon

The other kind of “loony” is a name for someone who is wild and crazy.

the other kind of loony

So what does this have to with friendships.  Well I was at the grocery store yesterday and I spotted a sign on the coin operated massage chairs that are outside the grocery store.

Massage chair

The sign on the coin slot said “Loonies Only”.  I called a friend KW, who wasn’t expecting a call from me so she wondered what was the news or reason for the call.  I told her, Something going on at the grocery store,  the massage chairs have signs on them that say “loonies only– I thought you should know.

She got the joke right away and we had a good laugh, together.

Laughter with friends, priceless. Maybe this is a “you had to be there” moment but I hope you get the joke regardless.

I know it isn’t Valentine’s Day

Have you ever heard the song “hello” by Lionel Ritchie?  I first heard it during a Disney Valentine’s special.  The video is cute, and it perfectly encapsulates (whew!) what happens in life.

Guys are just minding their own business, and then WHAM!

A Summer Day where I live

Happy Canada Day

Happy Canada Day (Photo credit: Anirudh Koul)

I realize that each of us sees our lives as fairly normal because we are used to the scenery, and our daily lives.  But others would love a glimpse because our lives are foreign to them!

I know that the peace and quiet in my small city I sometimes forget to appreciate because I have lived here 20 years.

Homes around the world vary a great deal also. In Canada it isn’t uncommon for homes and yards to be fairly large so people can have gardens, pools, fruit trees, or just someplace to put a small fountain or pool. Lots of people enjoy living in apartments for the convenience in Canada.

In other countries people live differently and I am interested in that. I want to see those everyday things, what your buses look like, homes, parks, grocery stores.

As soon as I realized that I realized I need to first share life here, what does it look like? A few years ago I went for a bike ride from one end of my city to the other. I took pictures of both the lakes and the channel in between. That is really nice thing to do in my city. Since it is small you can ride a bicycle easily from one end of the city to the other and it is a pleasant way to spend a few hours in July.  I even spotted a turtle that day but sorry no picture.

I hope you enjoy the pictures of a sunny day  for a cycle ride in Penticton
