Running on Empty – refill regularly

Africa……. What are you thinking?

When I was eighteen and starting driving more

than just to work and back home, I was counselled to never let my gas tank go below half-full.  I remembered his advice, and when on road trips I also used to keep track of spaces on the highways in the USA where there were fewer gas stations.

I believe there was one area south of Bakersfield, CA on the interstate #5 where I noticed there were no gas stations for nearly 175 miles so I temporarily took a different highway.

Instead of going through the mountains there on the interstate I went around to the east through a number of small towns and on the map it was 50 miles shorter, bonus! , plus felt more relaxed.

Today I am thinking about gas tanks,

and I remember that running out of gas is a stressful mind space to be in. Ever since I was nearly stranded on a gravel road out of gas, I am more aware of my gas tank. That one time, my gas tank had been hovering below empty for ten minutes.  It’s all I could think about! The last 30 minutes of that drive on back roads had me tight like a guitar string. Finally I found a gas station but by then I was all tense and, super stressed. I pledged that day I would avoid that feeling from then on, and be more careful.

What if I had a “calm” tank or an “empathy” tank? 

I haven’t heard the sound for a long time, but in some cars when the gas tank gets really low, there is a “bong” and a light on the dashboard. A warning to catch my attention.

I could use a warning to remind me when my calm tank needs a walk in nature.

I could use that alert also to remind me to refill my “empathy” tank, and give more understanding.

I don’t usually go below a quarter of tank in my car,

I fill up with gas around then and as a consequence I don’t need to look at the gas gauge for at least a few days.  Yay !  A full tank leaves me relaxed, and more confident while driving, one less thing to be concerned about.

I think that is where checking my Calm tank, and Empathy tank periodically makes sense. – I am going to be more conscious of my calm tank, and empathy gauge.

If they are getting low,  I will heed the gauge warnings and refill quickly.

Power of Words – you already have it

Words, we use them every day

and think nothing of it. But words can have power. They can encourage, educate, support, slash or inspire.

If you are like me, you probably underestimate the effect that your words have on the people around you.

I know I never thought about it, I’m not Winston Churchill or thought of myself as a person of influence, … but I am, and so are you.

A long time ago I was reminded of a forgotten conversation by a young man. He had been a camper when I was a camp counselor and he reminded me of a discussion I had had with him which  he never forgot. I was touched. I never knew my words could be memorable. He reminded me that we had had a discussion about music lyrics, and I had expressed my opinion about their importance and their effect. He reminded me of that, and I learned something that day. I felt grateful that I had said something positive, something memorable. I was surprised that he remembered.

Recently I shared a toastmaster speech called The Power of Words in a recent email to some of my friends and contacts.

Who is Mohammed Qahtani?

He is a Saudi Arabian engineer, he won the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking in 2015. Qahtani, won after several eliminating rounds that took six months with 30,000 participants from more than 100 countries.

Growing up he suffered from severe stuttering but he was able to overcome it by facing his fears, pushing the envelope and performing on stage.

He is passionate about public speaking and stand up comedy. He has participated in several conferences around the world where he inspires people to chase their dreams and he presents in Arabic and English.

He is successful both in engineering and public speaking and is a certified programmer from Microsoft and SAP, certified database administrator from Oracle and Microsoft, and certified advance speaker Gold from Toastmaster international.

He helps people achieve their dreams.

You and I have the opportunity though to brighten someone’s day, to let that person know you notice them, see them,  and that you appreciate the time they share with you.

Those opportunities are yours and mine frequently.

I remind myself, and I encourage you to seize those opportunities. If you need help in building your confidence in speaking, visit a Toastmasters club to learn how.

You and someone in your life might be tremendously thankful you developed that confidence in speaking, and communicating.

One day, someone may stop you and say

” You probably don’t remember this, but I will never forget that day when you encouraged me, it changed my life.”

Won’t you be glad you spoke up, and used your power of words.

It is a Power that you have now, the power of words; The ability to share your feelings, to make yourself heard,  or to plant a seed.

Welcome to Life and Random Thinking

I may need a new category for my blog named- “songs I wake up singing“.

It doesn’t happen every day or even every week but I regularly, but not often, wake up singing.

Today I was singing “Kodachrome” by Paul Simon when I woke up.

I was up late last night,  tempted by my son I went out for a late night ride about 10 p.m. – we zoomed around town silently with our lights on our bikes. It was delicious, warm wind and it was probably 25 degrees.

Yesterday I was up at 5 am but today I lollygagged in bed until 7:30ish and when I woke up for some reason I was singing these lyrics.

They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day, oh yeah

My earliest recollection of the Kodachrome song

would be I think when I was in grade 9,  maybe 1973? (I should check when this song was released, hmmm?)

In 1973 I lived in East Vancouver, I was attending Vancouver Technical High School.

My home was on the top of hill on 4th Avenue, and my best friends John and Blaine walked together with me to school.  One of the small moments in time that I look back at now very fondly.

Blaine was the best at knowing about music and he knew the words to the song Kodachrome and I had memorized them as well. It was beautiful sunny day and I still recall walking along the peak of the hill, along Nootka street and then west on 5th avenue as we headed to school.

You know you have a special friend when they sing with you, and Blaine sang songs with me in the car and he played softball also.

A great guy. and I have posted before about those moments and you can click to see the post.

Photography of course has changed,

from very few photos being taken in my grandfather’s day who was born in 1914 and those were black and white. My Dad who was born in 1938 took photos sparingly and those are all so appreciated by us today.  Now today with digital photographs and everyone has a camera it seems everyone is taking photos with abandon.

Below are some photos I want to share from a recent walk in the Okanagan where I live. I know you will love to the view, I certainly did – pretend you are with us ♥ It’s hot, so bring water. 🙂

This walk was on the east side of the valley on the old KVR (Kettle Valley Railway) trail. The tracks are gone but traces remain including the tunnels and trestles that are north of where I was walking – 23 trestles of all sizes in Myra Canyon and you can walk or cycle them.

This walk was just under 10 km to the tunnel and back and you can see we are quite high up and have a plane viewpoint.

Definitely cycling the Myra Canyon is one of the secrets of the Okanagan that many people don’t experience.  I have even met tourists from Europe there however and they were loving the experience.

Hummingbirds – Lessons in Flight

hummingbird4The little hummingbird, so tiny and quick.  They pack a lot of beauty into their compact bodies, and I am always excited to see them.  I focus right in because one second they are here – then zip!  Gone !

My Dad has a hummingbird feeder that sees lots of action, the tiny visitors to his feeder stay 12 months a year, and in the colder months they buzz his head when he hangs his feeder in the morning.  He relaxes and enjoys their bursts of energy and astounding flight skills.

My father-in-law Neil has a hummingbird feeder also, and his fliers seem to fence as they buzz around the feeder.  Some intense action!   Neil has to refill his feeder often as they love visiting.

In addition to the displays of flying skill, up and down, back and forth these wonders of nature include a lesson.  Maybe an important one.

A lesson about the small things. 

When a hummingbird appears near you they are reflecting the positive side of life by showing you the joy in small things. 

It’s important that you honor the small things in life and let go of the heavy toxic ones.

Small things are the ones we take for granted, we can be oblivious unintentionally. 

I missed the wind on my face when I was hospitalized for months.

I miss the “no reason” phone calls with my Mom.

I miss saying good night to my daughter before she went to sleep.

I miss telling bedtime stories, and nearly falling asleep myself to my two.

I miss breakfast with Dad, we shared breakfast for years.

I don’t want to miss the little things anymore, it’s a habit I’m breaking.

I miss riding in the back seat, Mom and Dad up front,

I miss 12 cent comics!

Wayne & Hepburn – Originals Forever

My blog isn’t usually about movies per se, and neither is today’s post.  The old movies focused on interaction between the movie characters, and dialogue.  There weren’t “green screens” but those movies were watchable over and over because they connected with me.

Many actors stand out as “originals”,  in my opinion John Wayne was an original and so was Katherine Hepburn.

They starred together for the first and only time together in a movie called “Rooster Cogburn”.  It was a movie that won no awards, but for me it shone because of the chemistry and respect that I felt between the two actors.

Rooster Cogburn was the character that John Wayne created for his movie True Grit (1969). He earned an Oscar for that role, and a remake since was a pale comparison to what Duke created.

I saw that movie from the back seat of my parents blue Ford station wagon at the drive-in theatre.  The speaker was hooked on the car window where Dad sat. My brother and I were in the back seat and the “house” was filled with cars of all types, the movie began just after sunset.  Those were the days of popcorn and bench seats !

The old movies, especially the westerns (or dusters we called them), were a mixture of humor, adventure and in the case of Rooster Cogburn “true grit”.

The sequel entitled “Rooster Cogburn” with Katharine Hepburn was also full of wonderful memorable lines by each of these “originals”.

I just want to share a few quotes from each of these two movies today.

First some quotes from True Grit.

Let me set up the scene for the first quote: Rooster and his two travelling companions stop for a drink. Mattie is a strong-willed young woman who has hired Rooster to find the man who shot her father.  La Boeuf is a Texas lawman who also has score to settle with the man who is wanted for killing Mattie’s father.  La Boeuf is the opposite of Rooster, young and charming and also from Texas.

Mattie[drinking water from river near camp] That tastes like iron!
La Boeuf: You’re lucky to be where water’s so handy. I’ve seen the time I’ve drank out of a filthy hoofprint and I was glad to get it.
Rooster: If ever I meet one of you Texas wadis who ain’t drunk from a hoofprint, I think I’ll… I’ll shake their hand, or buy them a Daniel Webster cigar! [he looks over La Boeuf’s horse] How long you boys down there been mounted on sheep?
La Boeuf: Go ahead and have your little joke. But I’ll tell you one thing: that little fella there will still be running when that big American stud of yours is winded and collapsed.
Rooster: Ha — sheep! Heh, heh…

Along the way Rooster questions a man named Quincy trying to locate where the fugitive Ned Pepper might be hiding.

Quincy: I don’t know any Ned Pepper. What’s he look like?
Rooster: Short, feisty fella. He’s got a messed-up lower lip. I shot him in it.
Quincy: In the lip? What was you aiming at?
Rooster: His upper lip.

Now a couple quotes

from the movie Rooster Cogburn movie starring John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn.

Katherine Hepburn plays the daughter of a preacher, she is accompanying Rooster Cogburn as she is determined to ensure the outlaw Hawk is brought to justice.

Rooster Cogburn tries to leave her behind but she is just as stubborn as he is, that’s what happens in the brief trailer below.

 

Along the way while chasing the outlaws,

the characters of Rooster Cogburn and Eula Goodnight grow in respect for each other despite their differences, and they grow “fond”.

Here are a couple quotes from their interactions.

  • (John Wayne) “How old are you?”
  • (Katharine Hepburn) “Shall we say it has already struck midnight?”
  • (John Wayne) “Ma’am, I don’t know much about thoroughbreds; horses or women. Them that I did know, I never liked. They’re too nervous and spooky; they scare me. But you’re one high-bred filly that don’t. ‘Course, I don’t know what you’re talking about half the time.”

Katherine Hepburn as Eula Goodnight begrudgingly respects the rough-edged Rooster Cogburn who has earned a piece of her heart, and she gets in the final retort in their feisty but velvet gloved verbal jabs.

  • (Katharine Hepburn) “Reuben, I have to say it. Livin’ with you has been an adventure any woman would relish for the rest o’ time. I look at cha, with your burned out face and your big belly and your bear-like paws and your shining eye, and I have to say you’re a credit to the whole male sex, and I’m proud to have ya for my friend.”
  • (John Wayne) “I’ll be damned if she didn’t get the last word in again. Well –

Where does time go? – Part 4 of 4

Welcome back to “Life and Random Thinking” – I decided to write a sequel to the first post with the name “Where Does Time Go?

I decided this was essential because I asked for comments on three topics in my first post, and it’s only fair to share why I was thinking about those topics.

I checked and walking the road to the top is 2.85 km at Giant’s Head Mountain in Summerland. The road is my choice right now, the grind and the friendly giant trails I will try, if I can, when I get more fit!

Comfort zone – place to avoid

Let me make it clear,  I enjoy being comfortable.

I also am not a person who does mountain top hikes that last weeks, I don’t sleep on the ground, and I don’t have abs that you can grate your cheese on.  Not even close! ha ha

When I scrutinize my day, I realize that sometimes I am tempted to spend too much time on the couch, being comfortable, reading, relaxing.

They say black holes are so strong that light can’t escape – my couch must have a tractor beam on my gluteus maximus just as strong sometimes.

I believe it is excellent to relax but not all the time, and not too much either.

Balance right?

I know your life is busy, chores, hobbies, life, visiting and so on.

You deserve some comfort in your day and everyone does but one of the comfort zones I am talking about is when you stop challenging yourself.

Failed anything lately?  Have you done anything lately that risked failure?

Are you still learning? Mentally and physically I think we have muscles that will become flabby and weak unless our lives include habits that stretch us.

It’s the stretching that is the goal and an achievement on its own.

I think I am still a Toastmaster, after 14 years, because I am uncomfortable speaking.  I am not a self-confident person naturally.

Speaking in front of a group, giving toasts, sharing an inspirational topic or being on the executive of a board etc are all muscles that I must regularly exercise and stretch. If I don’t they will quickly decline and disappear.

The comfort zone is tempting, but I would rather overcome my fear, and avoid the regret.

I suppose I relate it to when I was 15 years of age. In school we had sock hops in the gym.  I sometimes stood along the wall for part of the sock hop.

Remember Elton John’s Crocodile Rock?

I could hear the music, I could see the dancing but it was safe, and comfortable along the wall.  But not much fun.

I had to risk my comfort zone and get on the floor if I wanted to enjoy the sock hop, and I knew I was not a dancer!

The noon-hour dance was over quick, and I wanted my memories to be doing and not watching/wishing.

I think the memories I treasure the most are the experiences. The times with my family doing things, not my alone time.

They aren’t the popcorn on the couch moments either,

  • they are the mountain top moments,
  • the moments laughing with my son, and daughter
  • the memories teaching my son and daughter to ride a bike
  • sheltering from the rain watching a storm with my daughter
  • the meandering bike rides with my son,
  • the snorkeling discoveries in Hawaii,
  • the trials of travelling, getting lost, catching the plane just in time,
  • the baseball game trips with my son, the 7th inning stretch song together
  • the unexpected discovery of a bear on my picnic table when I was camping in my teenage years

I will fill my picnic basket of memories with experiences, and challenges and not regrets.

Those treasures can be pulled out and enjoyed from time to time, but I want to fill that basket to the brim.

The comfort zone tempts me, and I will visit, but I will also leave from time to time.

Contrary to what we usually believe, … the best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times.

The best moments usually occur when a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limit in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult or worthwhile.

Optimal experience is thus something we make happen. Mihalyi Csikszentimihalyi

Coasting downhill is wonderful for skateboards, but life is full of ups and downs, and going uphill gives us muscles and those wonderful endorphins!

Final thought: As I was breathing heavy, and dragging my feet uphill Giant’s Mountain the other day, I thought to myself: If Mount Everest was flat, there would be no celebration.
