French fries and Bulls eyes

Today’s post is the 9th instalment of CB and PB’s story.

The first post was Spread Your Wings .  After I wrote that post, the next two instalments (part 1 and part 2) were what happened the day Ravi left home.

Ravi left his parents home to go to a new city, a new life, a new job.

If you are new to the series, I hope you will enjoy the story from the beginning with Spread Your Wings .

Thanks for coming along. ♥ – David

Ravi and Marie followed Vita home in Ravi’s car, the rusty brown Honda civic was reliable even though it had holes in the fenders.  Vita was worried about noises she heard outside at her home, and Ravi was going to help investigate by hiding a motion-activated wildlife camera outside her home.  If someone was prowling her house at night, the camera would take a video and prove it and maybe identify the prowler.

Vita parked in her driveway, and Ravi parked in front of her house. Vita’s home was lovely older white wooden house about 25 years old, with blue shutters beside the windows and flowers alongside the sidewalk. A wrap-around porch was at the front of the house and it overlooked the lawn and the street. Ravi and Marie imagined it was relaxing to sit on the porch in the warm weather. The yard had a beautiful oak tree that towered over the porch with a clear view of the house front door.

Ravi used Vita’s stepladder and climbed up to the top step to place the wildlife camera about 8 feet (2.5 metres) above the ground. The camera hung on two nails he pounded in and he aimed the camera lens at the house porch and front door.

“The camera is designed to video animals without scaring them, it works silently, and is activated by movement Vita”, Ravi explained.  “I have put the camera up where it will be in the dark, but it is designed for filming in the forest with no more light than the stars. I can come back tomorrow and see if we film anything, it can be set off by raccoons, so it will certainly work to see if anyone is around your house at night.”

Vita thanked him with a hug, and invited both Marie and Ravi inside, tempting them with coffee and cinnamon buns. At the mention of cinnamon buns, Marie blushed, and Ravi smiled.

Vita already knew of course that Ravi bought cinnamon buns regularly but did not know their significance to Marie.  Ravi wisely did not share his nickname for Marie was CB for cinnamon buns. That nickname was for Ravi and Marie alone.

They all went inside for coffee, treats and a tour of Vita’s house.

Vita concluded her tour of her home in the kitchen where the coffee and treats were already waiting,  warm and wafting the scent of cinnamon and sugar.

Vita explained as she poured the coffee; “So you see, I moved to Gravelberg because I inherited this house from my uncle. It is a beautiful home but I will probably have to move into an apartment because I am so busy with my coffee shop.  I don’t have time to care for a house and yard and I don’t need so much room. I feel lonely in a big house, all alone.”

Ravi looked around, silently he wondered if Vita’s house was a solution to him. He was living in a small basement suite and wanted to move, but wasn’t sure how or if he should ask Vita if she wanted a tenant?  He would love to care for her yard, plus he could do the little do-it-yourself projects for her.

Marie was very quiet also, but her mind was racing ” I wonder if Vita would like a tenant here? I love this old house, and I hate living all alone also”.

An hour later, the three friends hugged and promised to have dinner tomorrow and check the camera to see it captured a video of the prowler. They might have to check more than one night just to be certain, a prowler would not be there every night, would he? Tomorrow for their potluck dinner Marie would bring salad, Ravi would bring fried chicken and Vita would provide french fries! Marie, Ravi, and Vita loved french fries with a little rosemary and baked in the oven.

Ravi assured Vita “the camera is aimed at your porch with a bulls-eye on the front door”,  and “if you feel nervous tonight, Marie and I will stay and keep you company tonight. I can see your couch folds down and I could sleep there.”

Vita hugged them both, with tears in her eyes, she thanked them, and asked them both to stay over.  She needed the sleep and it was a big house with 4 bedrooms and lots of room.

Later the three friends all relaxed and watched Henry Fonda, and Anthony Quinn in the old western movie “Warlock”.

It was nearly eleven o’clock when the lights winked out from inside the house and the only sound was crickets in the yard.

The only light from the streetlights, and peaceful.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Soon after they were all asleep

a blue pickup truck drove silently  past Vita’s house.  It paused on the street, the driver staring long and hard at Ravi’s Honda parked there, then the truck drove not too far down the street and parked, turning off the truck’s engine and lights.

The driver then walked purposely back to the Honda, and then systematically stabbed all four tires in the sidewalls, producing flat tires on all sides.

He stood there, his hands on his hips, breathing hard and holding the guilty screwdriver in his hand and then stomped back to his truck.

He then drove away, after spitting out the window, his only regret he hadn’t smashed the windshield also.

He pounded his fist on the steering wheel.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The camera was quiet, undisturbed on the oak tree the lens focused on the bullseye of the porch, all ready to capture movement of any kind.

It was still there, photographing Ravi when he left the house in the morning, and then returning 38 seconds later, to share his news to Marie.

Sock it to me

Welcome to “Life and Random Thinking” – I have included some links today for readers to hop to other internet pages for more information on some topics.

Thank you for your interest in my blog!, your ideas and feedback are welcome- David

Sat here one morning looking down at Skaha Lake (north end) – a different view perspective ♥

It’s spring in the Okanagan valley, but when it comes to rain

‘Sock it to me”

In the Okanagan valleysnow is melting and the creeks are flowing heavy down into the lakes.  As the weather improves so will the lake temperature but only the bravest dip their toes, or anything else into the lakes, until at least mid-June.

Light rain this morning in the valley means my grass is looking lush and forest green. Even the hills of this dry valley are enjoying a little green instead of their normal desert brown.  This extra rain I hope will translate into a summer that will have fewer forest fires.  Forest fires and smoke have terrorized the valley in some of the recent years.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

‘Sock it to me”

was a Goldie Hawn phrase, way back, wayyyy baaack in the days of the sketch comedy television show Rowan and Martin . It was on television from 1968 to 1973.

I know none of my blogging friends will remember, but you can ask your grandparents (or your spouse) about the show.  (chuckle)

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

‘Sock it to me”

I was putting on my shoes in the foyer with my son the other day and I spotted his two different colour socks, one blue and one grey.

“I have a set just like those!” I pointed out jokingly.

I loved what he said next and quickly jotted it down so I could share it with you.

Different colour socks are cool.

Why live your whole life wearing same colour socks when you go out.

Rebel a little, so what if it seems silly to someone else.

It won’t hurt anyone.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Perhaps Frank Sinatra sang it best in “Young at Heart

Don’t you know that it’s worth
Every treasure on earth to be young at heart
For as rich as you are
It’s much better by far to be young at heart

How wonderful it would be if now and then we just said “Look out world, different colour socks coming your way!  I’m Socking It To You! ”

Remain seated while the ride is in motion

when I was on a trip and visited the Grand Canyon, there was a glass walkway I could walk out on and look more than a mile down.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-8

My heart pounded at first when I stepped out in my slippers (so the glass doesn’t get scratched) and looked down.   Wayyyyyy down !

But the fear didn’t last.

I stayed out on the glass walkway for about an hour and by the end of the hour I was relaxed and confident.

I made light of the danger as the minutes ticked by, because I was safe. I was totally safe but I can see how people can get complacent even when the situation is basically unchanged.  Does that make sense to you?

Today

Many of us are fortunate enough to not be infected with the Covid virus and as time goes on, we may feel immune to the danger or belittle the seriousness of an infection.

Here’s Why COVID-19 is Much Worse Than The Flu

I think the possibility of losing my life, or causing someone else to lose their life is a gamble I cannot risk.

The time to evaluate the pandemic response is not during the pandemic.

Just like when the roller coaster plummets down the first hill, don’t take off your seat belt then.

My friends, the time to evaluate how dangerous a roller coaster ride is not while on your ride, it’s when your standing on the ground, and safe.

So Please remain seated while the ride is in motion. ♥

Warm and Toasty

The heavy rain pounded the road, and gusts of wind shook the old rusty Honda as Ravi and Marie headed back to Gravelberg.  The heater in Ravi’s old car was a gem though, and both of them were warm and toasty.

Silly Love Songs was on the radio so they were singing along lightheartedly.  “My voice sounds better in a car” Ravi joked.

You’d think that people would have had enough of silly love songs
I look around me and I see it isn’t so
Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs
And what’s wrong with that
I’d like to  ere I go again

Hug-A-Mug PB? – Marie asked, I’m not hungry but would love one of Vita’s coffees sweetie, my treat !  Hug-A-Mug was their local coffee shop which was owned by Vita, and they were customers and friends of hers.

Ravi  pretended to think about it, then grinned – ‘If you buy the coffee, then I will buy the lemon cake!’

Resistance is futile!” – they said together with a laugh!

Ten minutes later, after a quick dash through the liquid sunshine, both CB and PB (Marie and Ravi’s nicknames for each other) were comfortably relaxing by a window table.

At first they warmed their hands by wrapping them around the hot coffee mugs (handmade by Vita the owner) but it wasn’t long before they held hands across the table.  The “free” hands were used to munch on their moist lemon cake slices or sip coffee.

‘Vita looked upset to me. PB did you notice?’

Ravi looked over at Vita, who owned Hug-A-Mug and back at Marie. ‘Let’s talk to her and check, probably your imagination.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

img_0113Vita locked the coffee shop door and joined them at their table. Vita hugged Ravi and then Marie and then sat with them holding Marie’s hand.

“Thank you for asking dearies, but I don’t think you can help.”- Vita smiled weakly.

“Go on Vita, maybe we can’t help, but we can listen”. – Marie encouraged.

Vita nodded, “I am worried about noises outside my house that woke me up a couple times last week.  It’s probably nothing, but it keeps happening. I have only just moved in there a week ago, and now I wish I hadn’t moved.”

Ravi nodded, “I know what, Vita you could be just imagining things because you are in a new house, but I have an idea. I know I can borrow a wildlife camera, how about if I set it up for you for a couple nights and see it’s your imagination, or maybe just some animals, like raccoons?”

Vita brightened up, her smile “Great idea!”and leaned over to Ravi and gave him a hug and a smush on the cheek! “Let’s try that!”

Across the street, in a dark blue pick-up truck a man watched the three of them, his eyes focused on Vita and then he drove away slowly.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Ravi drove Marie home and parked on the street. Of course, they held hands after he turned the car off, he called it hand-hugging.

I don’t think Vita  is imagining things, but we can at least check by using the camera.  I think Vita is a strong person, she’s lived alone a long time, and she runs her business all alone. ” – Ravi shared.

You read too many mystery novels Ravi!  Casey Holland isn’t here to figure it out like in Knock Knock you know.” – Marie teased.

“I know, and this isn’t Vancouver either, but still…..”

Marie cut him off with peck on the nose ” I’ve going in PB, I have work tomorrow, and need some sleep.  Great day today!  Love you” – and off she sprinted through the rain.

Ravi watched Marie until she was inside  and she waved.  He waved back and felt all warm and toasty, but it had nothing to do with his old car.

Message received loud and clear

The angel, Hikari, was enjoying watching over Ravi, and now Marie also came to be under his care and protection. It helped they were often together.  Hikari liked to envision that he sheltered them both under his wings.

Hikari was a softie for sweet nicknames. Ravi’s nickname for Marie was CB for Cinnamon Bun, and Marie’s nickname for Ravi was PB for Peanut Butter.

Seven days ago Hikari had watched Ravi’s botched attempt at a first kiss to Marie.  That awkward fumble had been overcome by Marie’s quick save! ♥  Marie could not breathe when he kissed her which cut that kiss unexpectedly short and that caused him to believe, only for an instant, his kiss was unwelcome. Marie quickly corrected his incorrect conclusion.🥰

Today CB and PB would hiking in the river canyon to find a scenic spot for a picnic lunch. Hikari and his helper angels could be busy today between ticks, snakes, and poison ivy. CB was making the picnic lunch while the angel invisibly watched.

*******************************************************************

Marie finished making the picnic lunch, and she sat back to look at the results of her shopping, chopping and assembling.

Smiling, she laughed to herself –   Too much food CB! If you put all this into a backpack poor PB won’t be able to walk !  Chuckling she put more than half into the fridge and took out some water for them both.

Marie was enjoying her dates with Ravi.  It was funny to her how shy Ravi had been before he kissed her that first time.  She had been starting to worry Ravi was immune to hints and she was going to have lasso him! (chuckling again)

Tying up her shoes and grabbing her coat, and backpack Marie was almost ready to go. She thought I must in love, I’m not just on time, I’m early !

****************************************************************

img_1428

The hiking trail was narrow and twisty leading up the side of the canyon.  Ravi was trying not to seem breathless but they were climbing a steep angle, and he wasn’t used to hiking.

Marie pretended to be out of breath 4 times otherwise Ravi wouldn’t stop to catch his breath, but she was smart and said nothing.  When he was rested, Marie would say “thanks for waiting” and give him a smile and wink to say thank you.

Ravi would have waited all day for one of those smiles. ♥

Near the top Ravi found a tiny deer trail and it lead out to small viewpoint that was small and flat, The view was amazing, it looked all the way down the canyon which was far below.

The sky was deep blue, and a light breeze kept them from being too warm. The clouds looked dark a few miles away so they decided together that this was “the spot“.

Marie’s blanket was unfolded onto the ground, their food was quickly unpacked. Fresh air makes for hungry people! Ravi sang a light grace to say thanks for the food, all of which disappeared quickly.

After eating they relaxed, talking about the week past, and nothing serious. A light smile never leaving their faces.

Hikari had seen constant smiling like this before, those face muscles were getting a workout!

It’s amazing how you can speak right to my heart
Without saying a word you can light up the dark
Try as I may I could never explain what I hear when you don’t say a thing

Silently for more than ten minutes they just sat together looking at the view. Holding hands. Looking into each other’s eyes and then down the canyon.

Twinkling eyes of both of them.  The eyes said everything they needed to hear.

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes saying you’ll never leave me
A touch of your hand says you’ll catch me if ever I fall
Now you say it best when you say nothing at all

When You Say Nothing at All – Alison Krauss

A distant rumble of thunder brought them to their feet.

Packing quickly Marie filled the backpack, helped Ravi put it on and gave him a quick peck.  Ravi pulled her back for a longer kiss and then contentedly they headed down the trail.

Marie leading down the dirt path with her heart and stomach both full.

Ravi with her every step, his heart singing.

Message received loud and clear when they said nothing at all.
