Time is A’wasting

“We have coffee here” she said, “It’s a waste to go out.” she said, when her husband suggested they go have coffee.

“Come on” he persisted, trying to overcome the inertia, feeling restless as he tugged with his eyes.

“We’ll walk” he said as he locked the door.

At the end of the driveway, their hands automatically sought each other, naturally fitting together after all the years, all the walks, all the handholding.

He smiled, breathed deep and it was a good day. You could not tell from the weather but his heart felt lighter with her hand in his.

fingers 3It was a short walk to the coffee shop. They talked about little things, and it was good to chat about their stuff. The coffee shop was practically empty. Youngish coffee barista’s encouraged them to buy food but they stuck to their coffee, his dark, and hers something latte made from a virgin camel milked at midnight by a prince as he pretended to choke at the price. She stuck out her tongue. He smiled,  and was happy to pay.

He picked up the paper, she looked at her phone and they sipped their drinks – nice. The food cooler buzzed and people walked by into the mall. Nice.

He poked her hand, “Can you hear that?”” What?”” The muzak, it’s cool” he said.  He stood up, scrapping his chair on the floor. He held out his hand “Come on, Time’s Awasting”. “No”, she said, “it’s a coffee shop I’m not going to dance”. He smiled, “just for a minute, pretend it’s for a movie”.

“You’re a nut” she said, “and you owe me big time!”  It was his turn to stick out his tongue and he did.

Just a minute they swayed, maybe 90 seconds and it was sweet, and it felt a bit absurd she thought later. Time is Awasting though. She looked at the headline in the paper, local man dies suddenly and unexpectedly.  She could imagine the shock and the loss of the wife, the friends,  the sudden abrupt stop of reality and opportunity to dance, to hold hands,. She wished that wife could just for a moment dance with her husband in a coffee shop for a silly moment.

They walked home together,  and their hands swayed as they walked. He had a smile and a look on her face that meant he was content.

He’s right she mused silently, Time is A’Awasting.

Sexy Mother Nature Shows-off Her Grand Tetons

Some people take 5 star pictures and share them; exactly what you will find in this reblog. Color and clarity wonderful plus the warm narrative of the author. My hat is off.

Mother Nature is proof that women rule the world.  Us men are mere toys: something to humor them when they are bored and someone to torment, yet love.  Every time I think I will be clever and try to outsmart the fairer sex…in the end I am humbled.

Understanding this is what made my late-summer plans ridiculous.

I thought I would spend the time romancing the daughters of Mother Nature.  The plan was pretty simple: visit my steady girl Ellinor (of Olympic National Park fame), have a wonderful time together, and then later sneak off to Wyoming to visit her sisters Teton and Yellowstone, to see if their rumored natural beauty was true.

A quick trip, a simple glance and then I would head back to Seattle to be closer to my girl.

Now, I like to think that I am a one-woman man and Ellinor is the girl…

Höfn is my spiritual home.  Some of my best friends are here.  I have been welcomed into homes and into the community and treated with the most incredible hospitality here and when I became ill here a couple of weeks ago, I was treated with care and compassion to the point that phone calls were made way beyond the call of duty to check how I was doing.  Yes, Höfn is where my heart is.

Besides the wonderful people and the incredible health and dental care, the scenery is just incredible and a short ride along route 1 and through the tunnel that takes you through a range of mountains you will come to Hvaines.  If you’re from Höfn, which as I’ve mentioned before is pronounced h’up (the h is very breathy) you’ll pronounce Hvaines with a sort of clearing of the throat k followed…

Sun does not shine every day..

Perhaps (if you are Trooper fan) you recognize this snippet ” Sun does not shine every day” from Here for a Good Time.

But in actuality the sun does shine every day, really it does. Anytime you go up in a plane and get up above the clouds, you find blue skies.

It’s us down below that can’t get above the clouds, or forget about the blue sky that we crave.

A couple days ago here the blue skies were easy to enjoy, and I spent mid day with my son as we drove to the north end of town to enjoy the Okanagan lake and lunch in the fresh air.

But the following days were wet, wet, wet and cloudy.

Isn’t that the way? Blue skies day and then a day when you are looking for your waterproof jacket.

I suspect most of our days are the blue skies kind, but some are going to be the kind where you want to curl up with a cup of Bengal spice tea (or hot chocolate with lots of whipped cream), in front of warm crackling fire and not lift a finger.

nm5It’s important on those days to remember the blue sky is still up there and the clouds will move and usually do so within a few days.

Sometimes the waiting is tough.

Oh give us patience, and  please be quick!

Our emotions sometimes get impatient for the sunny days and why not, it’s just human.

Hang in there fellow travellers on this spinning top – when my sky is blue and your clouds are dark and scary – I’ll send my blue skies your way soon, I promise.

Your days of needing sunscreen are coming, I promise and when they arrive, and they will….

Then Soak up that sunshine and blue skies my friends, soak it up.

Thanks for reading, comments and suggestions always appreciated. 🙂

Don’t nearly die first

This post actually came from a speech I gave recently at a Toastmasters meeting; the speech was called”Be Like A Child“.

I had failed an attempt to color in an adult coloring book.

2013-04-06 08.04.22

Can I look now?

Instead of being able to relax; I was tense. Instead of taking my time; I was rushing. Instead of being in the moment; I was thinking about what I wanted to accomplish next.

From this epiphany I wondered about my daily journey, Am I enjoying each day?

I enjoyed each day when I was young.

When I was young I didn’t think too far ahead. My parents were “in the driver seat” and they took care of planning and doing all the things that I was oblivious to. I metaphorically enjoyed the ride and looked out the window and it was relaxing and fun.

I remember enjoying each day after nearly losing the ability to.

After a period of five months in the hospital, and nearly dying – I remember finally leaving the hospital. I paused at the exit, finally able to enjoy a breeze, and feel the sun on my face. I stood there and lived that moment in the doorway of the hospital.

So what was I learning? Do I need a second childhood to live in the moment and enjoy what is going on around me? Do I have to darken death’s door to savor the treat of wind on my face?

I hope not.

I decided that I wanted to recover, and that we all should recover certain child like behaviors.

Confidence – a child does not make decisions based on success or failure, just seeks fun, and new experiences. Yes, I want child like confidence and  child like positive attitude.

The ability to love and appreciate life – meaning myself, other people, and the world. The mindset that stops and appreciates the small beautiful things. The mindset that is generous and without hesitation tells people in my life that I love them, I appreciate them, my life is better because of them.

I compared our lives to a bowl of soup.  We are all given a bowl and each day is spoonful of life from our bowl. But some bowls will be empty before others, and none of us know when that spoonful is our last.

Taste your spoonful each day. Be like a child. Be like a child, taste it and don’t rush. It’s the only bowl you get.

Don’t nearly die first, Today remember your bowl is limited. Be like a child in confidence. Be like a child in generosity, and appreciating life.  Take a deep breath, feel the breeze, get down on your knees and admire the green of moss.

Bless you and thank you for reading.

In between everything else this year I am trying to walk 7 kms each day. The youtube video below is one I made early February 9 about a kilometre from my home just after sunrise, instead of a wintery breeze it was calm so I savoured it.
