Mt. Ellinor and Skokomish Mountain Goats-1 From the moment I awake, I lie silently and listen to the calling of the universe to determine the type of day ahead, because every day has its own personality. Some mornings are overwhelming, blasting with the sound of horns and a declaration of chaos. A day that can zap the life out of the soul, and the only bright spot is thinking of the good tomorrow may bring. Mt. Ellinor and Skokomish Mountain Goats-2 Other mornings, the universe whispers and the day arrives quiet and serene. I am able to spend the day deep in thought, piecing together ideas and by night my life resembles some type of order. Then there are mornings like today, when the universe offers a connection that seems very personal. A feeling of confidence floating between secrets and knowledge: an invitation for adventure and a day to push the envelope. Ancient Fisherman of Folklore

Peaceful and exploding in color, this post is also narrated with thought provoking insights.

Fisherman of Chinese Folklore

Silence.

Prior to the break of dawn, there is the pure ‘silence of nature’ as a man begins his day.  There are no beeping alarm clocks, no blare of traffic and it is the noticeable absence of the incessant sounds of technology ~ a staple of our every day existence ~ that creates greater peace to this calm.

Fishermen of Folklore-8

The silence of nature, with only faint sounds of the water lapping along the skiff and soft squawks of cormorants as the fisherman prepares himself for the day.  Such scenes were common centuries ago, but today are just rare hints of a glorious past.

Fishermen of Folklore-4

Nothing captures my interest more than mystical stories of the past.  Stories of folklore that can provide an adventurous path to archaic ideas and faraway cultures: sanctuaries to contemplate what was, what is and what could be.

Tales from the past, part myth and part tradition, containing so…

Most of us do this every day

If you were thinking the answer is “sleep”, that’s close to what I am talking about.  I think we all dream every day, unless we are just too zonked to do that.

dream 2Personally I think that I dream every night, sometimes I can remember the dream fleetingly and then it slips away, lost to my memory.

Interesting since we foray into dreamland every night, wouldn’t it be awesome if we could direct the topic of our dreams every night? Kind of like that Gary Wright song = Dreamweaver

dream 3In many of my dreams that I recall I float, I have no idea of what that means, but levitating along not too far above the ground seems a nice way to pass the evening.

Or tobogganing down a hill made of ice cream, but I digress.

Worse of course are those nights when you can’t let go of a theme you don’t like and no matter how absurd it is, it sticks.

Just the other night before I hit the sack, my wife Sue mentioned Jurassic World – and sure enough I dreamt about being chased by dinosaurs all night, which she thought was hilarious in the morning. My suggestion to her was if she is going to plant dream ideas in my head before I go to sleep, and I’m going to be chased; then I want them to be lingerie models.

eyes up and wiggleI wonder if next she thought to herself “dream on! ” 🙂

Perhaps better still are the dreams we remember,  where we have a goal and envision how we will get there and then make it happen.

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.

dream 1Yes,  holiday, family trip, success in the best meanings of the word – have a vision, not a dream, and have that vision every day so you live without regret.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to any comments, or feedback.

Shark or Skateboarder – which are you?

Recently I read a true story  (read the story in the link) about a blind individual who worked on one of the top floors of the World Trade Center.  The building shook, and he reached out for his service dog with the command “ Forward “.  Forward is the first command service dogs learn,  and that was the theme of blind author.  No matter what you are dealing with, even in the heat, and stifling gas fumed stairwells walking, and standing in dozens of stairwells you need to go forward to grow, to survive, to achieve.

So what has that got to do with sharks and skateboarders?

I think I’ve always been told that sharks need to keep swimming to live, something about their gills or lack of lungs. That makes think that there is a parallel for me, and possibly for you.

During our lives for the first decades we are pushed to move forward by our parents, by schools, by our education and careers but at some point those pressures diminish, and stop.

At that point we have a choice, we keep moving forward because we want to keep growing, to keep learning, to keep from being stagnant, all kinds of reasons OR we coast, much like a skateboarder.

Funny thing about skateboarders though, they coast downhill, only.

So that is my question for you dear reader, are you going forward like a shark, learning, and growing, challenging and avoiding brain atrophy; Yes?

cricket in hammockThe alternative is that you have taken a break, and allowed yourself to coast for awhile like a skateboarder.  That’s cool, it’s nice to coast for awhile.

But healthier I think if we don’t stay coasting indefinitely.

Shark or Skateboarder – swimming or coasting?  Is it time for a change?

Give yourself some of life’s cookies, and duck regret

I love this face ;)

I love this face 😉

When you were doing positive actions in your life, it shows. It shows and people ask, what did you do?

Alternatively, are you doing what you always did? So why do you expect different results?

This post has two subjects.

The first is setting yourself apart should be a deliberate action by making positive change in your life. Sounds kind of touchy feely doesn’t it?  but I’m not talking about university courses, or how to listen better but there’s nothing wrong with that. What I’m talking about is small steps or big steps towards constantly helping yourself sidestep a permanent plateau, and a regret in life.

Are you there?

Are you there?

It can be Tai Chi, it can be taking a walk everyday, it can be turning off the TV one day a week, or can be an exercise class But you need to do something to nurture yourself. We all do.

Even if it’s only a few hours a month.

Seize your own blue sky

Seize your own blue sky

The second part of my post is recommending that you grab your podium in life, and teaching yourself to seize the opportunities you have and that you will get by training yourself to think, speak, and listen.

The Post Card

A smile started my day

For several years, a man was having an affair with an Italian woman. One night, she confided in him that she was pregnant. Not wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage, he paid her a large sum of money if she would go to Italy to secretly have the child.
If she stayed in Italy to raise the child, he would also provide child support until the child turned 18. She agreed, but asked how would he know when the baby was born. To keep it discrete, he told her just simply mail him a post card, and write ‘Spagetti’ on the back. He would then arrange for the child support payments to begin.
One day, about 9 months later, he came home to his confused wife.
‘Honey,’ she said, ‘you received a very strange post card today.’
‘Oh, just give it to me and I’ll explain it later,’…
