Wake Up, You are humming 007 theme music again

dr no poster  October 5, 1962 the new Bond film “Dr. No” hit theatres – the actual birth of 007 would have been 1953 with the first published book “Casino Royale“.

The one and only Ian Fleming is of course the author and his biography is a spy novel in itself,  especially his wartime service with British Naval Intelligence.

I’ve grown up with the James Bond movies, I used to go downtown on the bus and watch Bond double-features continuously aston martin james bond carand stagger out five hours later, my head reeling with Bond music, humming on the bus home.

I’ve also read as many James Bond books as I have come across, starting with Ian Fleming’s writings, then the numerous other writers who have carried on the “shaken, not stirred” tradition.  I’ve even read the juvenile books of James Bond and his adventures before he was assigned his “007”. Great books as well.

‘A dry martini,’ he said. ‘One. In a deep champagne goblet.’

‘Oui, monsieur.’

‘Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?’

‘Certainly monsieur.’ The barman seemed pleased with the idea.

‘Gosh, that’s certainly a drink,’ said Leiter.

Bond laughed. ‘When I’m … er … concentrating,’ he explained, ‘I never have more than one drink before dinner. But I do like that one to be large and very strong and very cold, and very well-made. I hate small portions of anything, particularly when they taste bad. This drink’s my own invention. I’m going to patent it when I think of a good name.’

Casino Royale, Chapter 7

from russia with love posterI drove home yesterday and wondered how many millions of men daydreamed adventures as Bond. Not the fights on the train like “From Russia With Love” but the other more seductive (shall we say) aspects of his lifestyle (not the killing).  I have decided it would be “jillion” of us guys, give or take a billion.

004Reality hit me and I realized (again) that I’m not a James Bond, or MI6 agent, regardless I am a fan, assign me my own number – possibly 004.

Early Memories – The Beatles – I wanna hold your hand

love the foot in the air

love the foot in the air

Some memories stick and I don’t understand why.  Oftentimes I stop, and try to take whatever I am experiencing, and make it stick, make it soak into my memory bank for future recollection.

When I was really small I remember visiting my Baba & Guido in Kindersley, Saskatchewan.  I remember I was quite young, and I was sitting in the back seat, waiting in the car as oftentimes, we had to do when we were young.

The car was white, the picket fence in front of the house was white, and the street was unpaved but hardpacked with gravel. Small town in the prairie. Baba and Guido (Grandma & Grandpa) owned a small home on a quiet street, in a quiet town.  To a city boy it was awfully peaceful, you could hear crickets at night.

I think my Dad left the radio to keep me company, and the Beatles came on the radio ” I wanna hold your hand” (link!). I never listened to radio and didn’t listen until I was in my teens. Somehow this song “stuck” and with it the memory of little boy, in the back seat of white Ford, relaxing – parents will be right back.

Can you remember the first song you heard on the radio?

The Amazing Things That Happen When You Get lost: On Getting Out Of Your Comfort Zone And Finding Yourself

I liked this post because it not only had beautiful images but it also shared how the writer has grown so the reader can also experience the advantages of being lost, exploring, and yes, even time spent alone. Read, and see if you don’t want to take a walk down down a street somewhere new, and gaze over a bridge, or hear a songbird.

No Amount of Green Replaces This

leprechaun_flipping_coin_md_whtToday is the day to wear green in minimum because it is St. Patrick’s day.  Though my cynical heart firmly believes the average person knows less than a tinker’s cuss about who St. Patrick is.

But if you follow this Hallmark excuse for a “day” you will wear green today, and maybe your “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” tshirt. I will wear green today but no tshirt for me, and no green beer.

The “green” that most people think about every day is the kind that goes in their purses or wallets. If they buy lottery tickets maybe they dream of what they would do with a big lottery win.

fingers 2I just celebrated “35” years with my beloved wife, Sue. I’ve been married longer than I was single. She was there when I on dialysis and nearly died, and we’ve shared lots of laughter, and hand-holding time over the decades.

It strikes me that what a lottery would never replace is the simple joy I get laying down with my wife around the shoulders of Sue, her head snuggled on my chest.

A lottery would never replace the joy my daughter Mandy gives me with a text, a call or a card.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAA lottery would never replace  of playing crib with my son, Dave and the honest joy we share in simple laughter.

No leprechaun pot of gold replaces the simple, priceless, joy of being content and counting your blessings.

But if you have a spare pot of gold, call me.

May you always have work for your hands to do.
May your pockets hold always a coin or two.
May the sun shine bright on your windowpane.
May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near you.
And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

– Irish Blessing

The Day I Stopped Saying Hurry Up – by Rachel Macy Stafford

This is such a sweet post, and it’s message pierced my heart. I hurry too much, the people I love deserve my full attention – I bet yours do too.

The Day I Stopped Saying Hurry Up - by Rachel Macy Stafford When you’re living a distracted life, every minute must be accounted for. You feel like you must be checking something off the list, staring at a screen, or rushing off to the next destination. And no matter how many ways you divide your time and attention, no matter how many duties you try and multi-task, there’s never enough time in a day to ever catch up.

That was my life for two frantic years. My thoughts and actions were controlled by electronic notifications, ring tones, and jam-packed agendas. And although every fiber of my inner drill sergeant wanted to be on time to every activity on my overcommitted schedule, I wasn’t.

You see, six years ago I was blessed with a laid-back, carefree, stop-and-smell-the roses type of child.

When I needed to be out the door, she was taking her sweet time picking out a purse and a glittery crown.

Good Advice for Bank robbers

Working on a contest but didn’t want to let a day go by – here is tiny post that includes a packed smile inside. Tea not beer?

Thank you Australia beer ads!

The Gangsters The Gangsters (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

This hugely funny commercial parodies car chases in an inventive way while also tells the message not to drink and drive!

The situation in the commercial is that the bank robbers stop for a celebratory beer but they choose the cops bar and are spotted by the police in the bar – and then the chase is on!

My advice to bank robbers – drink green tea!
