Despite challenges, They follow the Sun and Flourish

Thank you for visiting my blog “Life and Random Thinking” today.

This is my third post of the my “eight posts by September 1” challenge and I hope you comment and share your thoughts.

My blog has changed recently – the biggest change is no more ads! I am glad about this as I had no control of the ads shown and sometimes I wasn’t thrilled about what readers were subjected to ad-wise.

Secondly my website has simplified to http://www.dfolstad58.com and so easier for me to share with someone who says – really? what is the website?

Today’s post was inspired by my thoughts from two days ago in my front yard. – David

At the front edge of my yard my son has cultivated plants that welcome the quail. They love running under the bushes of Oregon Grape which is native to the area. There is also a beautiful red maple and tall grasses and lots of different types of succulent perennial plants.

The deer munch on the soft cacti in the winter but they manage to survive.

But now in August (now) there is probably 50 or so different sunflower plants that range in height from 3 feet high to 12 foot giants are crowding the grasses and succulent flowers. They are the visiting plant tourists, just here for the season.

These sunflowers are like a waving wall of bright yellow flowers that beckon and wave to the people who walk by but also shelter the baby deer that find shade underneath.

I was admiring the sunflowers two days ago and thinking about how none of these sunflowers were here in February. By October they will be done and we will have remove the sinewy stalks. The view change to the street is drastic and we miss them, and the winged visitors they bring.

In spring we used to plant sunflowers but much less so these past years because the sunflowers now drop enough seeds that they don’t much of an assist from us.

Sunflowers take about 120 days to reach full size I believe but along the way, they face obstacles.

The four-footed type in my yard.

I was admiring one sunflower and it had about 9 (nine) flowers on it but it was only about 4 feet tall. I remember wondering in July if it would flower at all because when it was growing, it was often nibbled on by deer. But there it now with all these beautiful flowers.

Just beside that survivor is another sunflower that was knocked down by deer so it was parallel to the ground. Another fighter, it managed to flower and has even added new stocks that reach vertically at a right angle to capture more sun and flower more!

Just behind these fighters are some of the tallest flowers and some of these of just one single flower, and now they have grown so heavy, that they droop down and the face of the flower faces down.

New flowers are still arriving now but many flowers unveiled themselves long ago. First they welcomed the bees who tiptoe in the center and the bees feet turn golden like they are wearing socks!

The flowers change and gradually evolve into seeds and that is the status now of most of this little city. Bees still dart hither and yon but mostly now the plants sway from the tiny birds that seek the seeds. Flapping their wings and hanging at impossible angles they strip the plants of their seeds. Amazing fliers they bob and fly in and amongst the plants fearlessly. Some with yellow corporal stripes on their backs, and some birds with yellow chests – all tiny and seriously cute to admire.

In their short lives these sunflowers bring so much joy.

They face the sun, facing east in the morning and follow the heat and light through out the day ending up facing west.

Bursting from a tiny black seed, they warm up in the spring and reach for the sky. Along the way some will have the best location, and have an early start to reach for the sun. Eventually they flourish and become the tallest of the tall.

Others face the danger of animals who love to chomp on the young plants, but they still manage to flourish and welcome the foraging bees, and the soft chirps of the small birds.

Others still are trodden and removed from vertical to ground adjacent – but they will find a way to flourish regardless.

The Four Letter Word that leads to Success

Thanks for visiting me @ Life and Random Thinking.

This is Post #2 in my challenge to complete eight by September 1st. I hope you will enjoy it, and your comments will propel me to my post.

What is the Four Letter word that leads to Success ?

Last week my son and I rode our bikes to the Little tunnel – that’s my thumb in the left margin. LOL

#1 son and the Naramata Little Tunnel

In order to get to the tunnel, we ride from the south end of Penticton, to the north end, and then continue on the retired Kettle Valley Railway (KVR) trail another 18 kilometres to the north.

It’s 99% railway grade which I think is 2% but still it’s a couple hours each way. We didn’t rush our ride and stopped to drink water and just soak up the experience along the way.

The view to the west is spectacular, and despite the low grade – you climb a long way up as the kilometres gradually get ground away.

You can see there is no fence and the panorama makes me slightly nervous, heart beats a little bit faster, but that is exhilarating also.

The ride was spectacular despite the rain we had that day. We got caught in a misty rain and sheltered inside the tunnel for ten minutes or so. Even wet my smile never left my face.

We had a goal (that’s the word!) and we were there! The ride was only half over, my butt was a little sore and it would be a little more sore by the time I got home, but it didn’t really matter.

Goal is spelled with four letters but GOALS are a wonderful thing to have!

I think there are times I have shied away from setting goals because I was afraid of missing them, or that I would have then to have a plan, a timetable and make a firm commitment if I made a real goal.

Now I realize that having a goal helps me succeed. People generally arrive where they plan to go. I wouldn’t take a holiday without a destination – and I generally always do arrive because I research, plan and execute!

Along with the destination, having a goal gave me the achievement factor! I reached my goal!

Perhaps

that is the missing factor for us, a goal.

When we start something new, it is exciting, new but that diminishes with familiarity, Perhaps that is when we can lose the excitement we began with – but we can reignite that by setting a goal!

The goal, and each step, no matter how small renews the buzz, the elation of achievement that is necessary to spark effort.

As a youth,

I used to practice swimming from one end of the pool to the other, but under water. It was stressful always, and I would be gasping when I touched the other end of the 25 metres but I also pleased that I didn’t give up.

When I was halfway there I usually felt like giving up but by then I could see the wall, my goal, so I would press on (my heart pounding, trying to stay calm) until I made it (barely!).

Goals makes life rewarding,

Goals removes boredom, bring excitement

Goals create meaning and motivation,

Thank you sincerely for reading and your encouraging comments.

Closer to home – the view from the KVR

My goals for this post are to write posts that readers will enjoy, and to learn from the experience; I am, thanks to the experience I have had meeting readers via the comments.

Some folks refuse free, Me? I like Free ♥

Thanks for visiting me today, I hope you enjoy today’s post and leave a comment. – David

Today will be the first of my challenge to myself to post eight blog posts before September 1 – I hope you will visit me again and add your thoughts, and suggestions. ♥

Did you stop by because you like Free also? Continue reading my friends because this post isn’t just about saving money !

Today’s post began at a workshop relating to libraries in June, one comment has stuck in my mind relating to membership to libraries for residents, Derek said ” Membership is already theirs – residents are automatically accepted as a member.”

A few days later I noticed something different at the bottom of my receipt for my library book – it read “You saved $23 today“. It was referring to the book loan from my local public library ♥

I have seen comments like this before on grocery receipts but I think this is the first time I have noticed this on my library receipt.

It underlined to me one of the reasons I use the library as extensively as I do. I saved $$$.

I like FREE but my library membership does more than save me money – it gives me options, and convenience. It entertains me and educates me!

I like the freedom of taking a book home and if I don’t like it then I can just return it in a few days – no questions asked.

I still like buying books and do so regularly but when I am choosing books I actually shell out dinero for (unless it is Sherlock Holmes related) it takes longer and is a more difficult decision.

In a sense I suppose I see the library card as a “GIFT CARD” that many people don’t take advantage of. I think it only because they don’t realize the benefits and programs of their public libraries – when they learn more they are amazed, and join up! It’s easy also because their membership is automatic – not depending on anything except if you live there! So easy ♥

Our memberships are just waiting for us to activate by presenting themselves at a library and picking it up. Most libraries have websites also so you can reserve your books, and many even email you to renew your book or return it so you don’t forget. Wow!)

If I had a gift card waiting for me – it wouldn’t be waiting long

Libraries have changed since I read “Freddy the Pig” and “Hardy Boy” mysteries. So many more options for members!

I use my library membership on an app called HOOPLA.

Now people use their library memberships for ebooks, and emovies and audiobooks. I am one of those that takes advantage of those options above illustrated in the images above !

Right now I have been listening to the audiobook by Stuart Woods – a prolific writer that I never get tired of, whether I am listening to his audiobooks or reading the hard copies I take out from the library. (top left image)

I am also reading right now a very interesting ebook. There are many books not that don’t make it into ink but you can read them via your library gift card/ membership. This one called Mayberry 101 is all about the episodes on The Andy Griffith Show. It is written by the writers and it is warm and insightful. ( top left image)

The ebook called “Go Down Together” was a recent book I downloaded using Hoopla (using my library membership). It is a documentary all about Bonnie and Clyde – so interesting I could listen to it and didn’t mind doing dishes! (middle image above)

The “Facts of Life” was a movie I watched on Hoopla. An old Bob Hope and Lucille Ball movie ! – two classics I enjoy and my interest was recently tickled listening to a podcast. I write about in another post I called “Lucille Ball – The Plot Thickens” – Link here. (top right image)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Besides “Hoopla” there is another app I use my library membership on for audiobooks and ebooks.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That one one is called Libby. See image below.

Of course anyone who downloads books, movies, ebooks from these apps will appreciate the convenience.

Whether ebooks or audiobooks – searching the catalogue, putting on a hold, taking out an item, or returning an item is done from wherever I am with my phone or desktop – tap tap.

One of coolest features I just L-O-V-E is that when a hold on a book comes up and I am already reading something it gives you the option of delaying it for a week or ten days whatever. I use that often when I am too busy to start something new.

Then it pops up later when I am ready. Perfecto !

Thank you ! for visiting, and I hope you learned a little bit about what else your public libary offers – that where you live automatically entitles you to free membership, which I consider my personal giftcard to movies, ebooks and auiobooks as well as those lovely titles I can hold!

Thanks to my library card membership/ gift card – I always have something to read or listen to that’s interesting, educational or both since I nearly always have my phone with me.

Biggest thanks to you for taking the time to read my blog today! – sincerely, David

What does it take to be wise?

My kind and thoughtful readers let me repost a video that received no votes or likes in 2014. This post is also feeling a little sad – 8 years later, still no likes or love. Can you make it happy?

Multiple Choice (My favorite type of questions)

What does it take to be wise?  Is it?

  1. Read Calvin and Hobbes faithfully and meditate, or
  2. Mars bars and Caesar salad, or
  3. learn from your mistakes, or
  4. learn from other peoples mistakes?

That’s what is tough about multiple choice, they’re tricky, and sometimes more than one answer is right. However the person asking the question only accepts one answer as correct, but it that right?

The correct answer is #4 – learn from other people’s mistakes. (maybe I’m wrong though in this case because Calvin and Hobbes are really cool).  (the coloured font is a link if you don’t know about Calvin & Hobbes)

What prompts me to write this post?

If you go to youtube and input a search “dutch and cycling” it comes up with some interesting youtube videos about the Dutch and their cycling paths.

Life life aloof

I originally did this post in 2014 – I was undiscovered then and received no likes at all I see. Maybe this time – nudge nudge (smile)

dfolstad58's avatarLife and Random Thinking

Yestflintstoneserday I drove up the valley to Kelowna.  I really notice the difference between the drivers here and in Kelowna.
In Penticton, my usual complaint about my fellow citizens is for them to stop dragging their feet and drive! I am not an aggressive driver, and my daughter would probably say I toddle since I usually drive about the speed limit. The frustration is the number of people in Penticton who drive the BELOW the speed limit EXCEPT on side streets.

stop sign I wish people would just crawl along on side streets but some people in my neighbourhood, pound on the gas pedal regardless of the number of yards to the end of the street, and the requisite semi-full stop.

In Kelowna, the drivers are all in rush, they drive along intent on riding on the bumper of the car in front of them. They drive like they are in…
