When we last left Allan and Mary, they are sitting in separate cars, and had unknowingly parked alongside each other at the lakeside. They both enjoy the Classic radio station and singing along with the radio. Glancing to the side they discover they are both singing along to the identical song. Each of them is curious about the other, but so far they have only made eye contact.
Allan stopped singing, an impossibly huge grin on his face. Seizing the moment, despite his normal hesitancy, he exited his car and circled behind to approach her driver door.
Mary’s heart was pounding, and she forgot to breathe when she saw Allan heading over to her car door. Not wanting to be craning her neck, she exited her car and stood between the cars and waited for Allan.
“I’m Allan, I saw you in the boat the other day and was hoping to actually meet you”, he smiled again “and here you are!”
“I remember you Allan, nice to meet you in person”, Mary smiled, but tried to be cool and not reveal just how glad she was to meet him.
“I see we like the same music, would you like to join me, or can I join you?” smile, smile?
Awkwardly they agreed Allan would join her in her gold Chevy. Soon with the music playing, they relaxed and 20 minutes disappeared as they talked about songs, the lake, and tried on eye contact with each other, each heart silently pounding.
Soon Mary sneakily asked about his girlfriend. He responded he had none, and a big check mark went off in Mary’s mind. Of course, Allan was then open to ask her about her boyfriend, and he signed silently when she said there was no such person.
Trying to be cool, and silently hating herself for it, she said she had to go. Allan was disappointed but bold enough to ask for her phone number and if they could meet again and he would bring her non-fat latte and this time they could sit on one of the benches along the lakeshore walkway. They exchanged numbers, suppressing the grins.
They settled on meeting two days, 7 pm and chose the spot, Mary trying not to seem anxious but knew she was going to burst with excitement as soon as he drove away.
Allan shook her hand, smiled and left her car.
Mary backed up and left him Just Standing There, but with great satisfaction she saw him watching her in the rear view mirror.
Allan climbed into his car, and turned on the radio – Crocodile Rock by Elton John was starting. He laughed at the lyrics when it came to the gold chevy, just like Mary drove 🙂
I remember when rock was young
Me and Suzie had so much fun
Holding hands and skimming stones
Had an old gold Chevy and a place of my ownBut the biggest kick I ever got
Was doing a thing called the Crocodile Rock
While the other kids were Rocking Round the Clock
We were hopping and bopping to the Crocodile Rock
