I don’t know what the weather is like in October where you (kind reader) live, but Mother Nature has been kind here in the first month of autumn.
My son David, working in the yard, soaking in the sun, while doing some pruning and removing all the sunflowers. He has done a fantastic job this year!
Autumn began September 23 and my last swim in Okanagan lake was September 24. Few brave souls other than my son braved the lake that day.
As the month has progressed, we have felt the colder nights, and the changing colour of the leaves.
Bike riding in the mornings has had to be modified also, I taped over the air flow holes in my bike helmet and wear a face toque on the cooler mornings and gloves for my hands of course.
Still the leaves are beautiful at this time of year, as they turn red or golden. Gradually they fall from the trees and have to be raked up, I will soon have lots of leaves to rake from my cherry and plum trees along with the leaves that blow from elsewhere of course.
This October autumn has been kind, it was too sunny and warm yesterday to wear gloves walking . The signs of change are there, there is snow in the mountain passes already.
No matter, because sometime after the snow falls in this valley, and we endure the long dark days of winter; spring will arrive and along with it the new leaves and the optimism of spring.
I realize I said endure winter but I like winter also. Walks when there is snow on the ground have a special silence, and we have snow shoes, and on a sunny day walking on the snow is a delight.
I do confess that December 23 or so when it’s the longest darkest day, I do a little snoopy dance and think to myself – I’m over the hump! Every day gets longer now!
But right now as I look ahead, I know November will bring frost on the car windows, and I will be remembering how kind weather was in October.

mr alaska man. I like your writing, so honest! I have heard wonderful things from my Dad about the nice people in Alaska. I am sorry for your loss, when we lose someone we love deeply, it leaves a huge hole.

The temperature here is 8 celcius and its a bit windy but very pleasant for a walk lakeside.

You Okanagan Valley wimps talking about winter! Ha!
I hate to break it to you Dave, but a bit of frost on a car windshield is not winter. Minus 30 or lower is winter. 3 feet of snow is winter, especially when the wind is blowing at 30k from the north.
Having said all that, and given that I live where we get those extreme winter events, I will still be honest and tell you that I would never have gotten into that lake on Sept.24.

We have it easy here absolutely! We have a rule not to complain about cold weather to anyone who lives in Alberta, Saskatchewan or Manitoba

I’ll bet the water was cold on Sept 24.

The water was quite cool and only one other person besides my son and I went in the water at all. We swam for about ten minutes. We had been swimming in the lake nearly daily all month including one day in the rain. As a result of daily swims we weren’t as nervous about the initial chill and just plunged in once it was up to mid thigh.
We have a polar bear swim, on New Years Day here and people plunge in, but people are in the water with wet suits in case of trouble, ambulance and there is a hot tub on the beach as well as a bonfire.
That is cold and I would like to do it once. They do that in many ocean cities like Vancouver but the ocean temperature changes less than the lake, the lake freezes here. Some years we skate on it, and in mild years there is still ice out from the shore about 100 metres.

We have had a gorgeous autumn here in southern Ontario! My favourite time of year & like you, I actually don’t mind winter! We are Canadian after all! Embrace it or get out of dodge!

It’s so true, if we only enjoyed summer that would be sad. Each season has things to be grateful for and in Canada we know to dress for the weather.
My family in the prairies know more about cold winter weather than I do, I admit it willingly.
