If you live (or visit) the Penticton/Okanagan area – almost anytime is a nice time to visit the Summerland Ornamental Gardens. These pictures are recent, and as you can see Dave caught a snake and posed for pictures.

The grounds are rarely busy with people. So bring along a few things to really stretch out  your visit. Bring a picnic, some drinks, a frisbee or just a book and blanket and stay awhile.

It is quiet, refreshing and I recommend it for a visit.

Happy Labour Day !

Learning on the Net – Yoga and Toastmasters !

After only a little bit of searching I found another yoga blog that I liked, and was encouraged by.

. A favorite topic of mine is headstands because there is something special about them. I remember learning by flipping my legs up against the wall and then the first time I started doing them in the middle of the floor.  The key is keeping your forearms shoulder distance apart, you use your forearms like a  tripod but keep your elbows tucked in tight as you can when you lower head into position. The balance and and control comes from your arms between your elbows and your hands.  Check out ” Raw Satisfaction Yoga

How to write a humorous speech!  This is something I wanted to research, and fortunately there are great bloggers like John Zimmer. This genius writes Manner of Speaking and shares his experiences with Toastmasters.

Since the Toastmasters Club is worldwide it is cool to connect with John and get his assistance, tips, and insights on writing a humorous speech.  Thanks John!  – You are an INSPIRATION!

Alienation of Communication – Chapter 2 NVC

I still have no idea of how these blogs will be received however for me the book NVC (see previous post) has given me insights on how I communicate. I can see how diagnosing, labeling, and being judgmental has alienated me from better connecting; PLUS I think it spawns a lack of inside peacefulness. (that’s difficult to explain, sorry)

Chapter Two is about opening ourselves to be able to be compassionate and open to connecting with others. The author explains how growing up that I, and others, learned to communicate without revealing what was going on inside myself.

Author’s Example: When I encountered people or behavior that I either didn’t like or didn’t understand, I would react in terms of their wrongness. If my teachers assigned a task I didn’t to do, they were ” mean” or “unreasonable“.

Example #2 If my partner wants more affection than I’m willing to give her, she is “needy and dependent“. But if I want more affection than she is giving me, then she is “aloof and insensitive”.

Example #3 If my colleague is more concerned about details than I am, he is “picky and compulsive“. On the other hand, if I am more concerned about details than he is, he is”sloppy and disorganized“.

The author’s goal to communicate is that all such analyses of other human beings by ourselves are tragic expressions of our own values and needs.

When I read this chapter I learned how when I use comparison, or judgement I block awareness of others.

I had to read this chapter twice because it was such an important concept to learn. I saw myself in this chapter and realize that this book will likely require a second reading because it cracks open life long habits. Fortunately in the subsequent chapters the author does a wonderful job of showing the reader how AND what to do to in order to allow positive, clear and productive communication in all types of situations.

I hope you can see how and why I am sharing about this book, NVC.

Fly Me to the Moon !

I was in Vancouver over the last weekend. We had a quick trip and it was nice, and the weather was great especially the morning we left when we visited English Bay.  When you are right down by the Burrard Street bridge on the sand, you have a ongoing parade of boats of all kinds, tugs, yachts, paddle boats, kayaks and sailboats.  A lovely, and live slideshow of sorts.

Speaking of slideshows..

When we visited my parents I was endowed with a special gift that they had built for me. It is an album of photos from my birth to my teens, all kinds of pictures and knick knacks including wristbands. The wristband from my birth (4 lbs 7 oz ) to when I was in Burnaby General hospital after being knocked unconscious; I was bikeriding at night and flipped over my handlebars after hitting a soccer post laid across the road. I don’t remember a thing, except I woke up and I had missed my birthday!

Speaking of Sand, Mirrors, and Beauty

I started on this blog post after hearing an interesting radio interview. A young gal, six months before her wedding decided to eliminate mirrors from her life for a year!  Really a whole year and that includes reflections from store windows, and photographs.  If you interested in why and her thoughts during the year then check out her blog here. A Year without mirrors.for the rules but first read HERE for the INSPIRATION.

Of course it begs the question then whether I could do that, or you possibly?  Would you like to avoid looking in the mirror, are we our worst critics?  Psychology.com has quite a few reasons why a year without mirrors could be very healthy – click here to see what they have to say.

Have you ever wondered what glass is made of? It is mainly sand, a special type of sand.

Most glass is a mixture of a large amount of silica that comes from fine white sand or pulverized sandstone, combined with smaller amounts of an alkali like soda (sodium bicarbonate) or potash to lower its melting point, and lime (from limestone) to help stabilize the mixture and ultimately make the glass stronger and water-resistant. These elements are naturally occurring throughout North America.

Does that description sound like art? I didn’t think so. I was watching a glass artist recently and he lives in Seattle but his exhibits are many, varied and bee – yoo tea full.  His name is Dale Chihuly, and he has many exhibits. The  ones I think I like the best actually look like underwater coral plantlife. In the video I saw of his  home he had some of his exhibits built under a pool so if you looked into the pool, you saw a magical coral reef that was backlit by lights and glowing to make it even more colorful.  Lots of beautiful art to see of his especially if you live in the Seattle area.
