I need directions

When it comes to music, I need help nowadays, sort of directions on what is out there. Most of my music likes date to the 1970’s. I was in high school before I started to pay attention to music.

At first, I really only paid attention to music when I went roller skating, or to ice skating parties during high school.  Blue Collar by BTO definitely reminds me of when I attended one of the high school ice skating parties.  Whether it was ice skating or roller skating ~guys had to have the rink to themselves to skate hard every now and then.

I did have some close buddies back at Vancouver Technical High School who were into music so I gradually started to pay attention. That was the days of Crocodile Rock, Elderberry Wine, and Elvis was still in the building.

One thing that is constant is my love of reading. But even there I can take directions from my son and daughter nowadays. It looks like even the relaxing pastime ofI  reading is becoming more electronic. Ebooks are now outselling the traditional paper books.

Now e-readers make sense if instead of 15 kilos of books students can just have textbooks in those tiny memory sticks.

I wonder though with all the electronics out there if writing is becoming a lost art form. I think that reading and telling stories to my kids when they were little is definitely one of my favorite memories.

I wasn’t successful sometimes in making them sleepy but I don’t regret one second of all the laughter. Now both my son (Dave) and (Mandy) daughter are awesome readers and share books with me (the hard cover kind). I recently was the last one to read – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Cracking Toast

Wallace and Gromit

Image via Wikipedia

Wallace and Gromit came to my attention after they won an Oscar award.  The amazing films are fun, and bewildering considering the lifelike movement of the plasticine characters. They still pour tea, and seem to move through the air.

The films are available at most video stores to rent and are great entertainment.

Cracking Toast ” Of course, that is the line of Wallace after he drops from his bed, through the ceiling, lands at the breakfast table just in time for toast to pop from the toaster.

Greetings, Hello, Hi There

This Muppets skit is priceless but so hard to explain to anyone else.  But if you are in on the joke…………..then you get to laugh about it with your friends through imitation.  That is one of the best things in life, laughing with friends.

I am convinced that humor is also good for your immune system. What does that mean? Well if you want to stay healthy, Get your rest, Eat properly and imitate the yip yips.  Brrrr- Ring!

I’m reading a book by Robin Sharma and it is called the Monk who sold his Ferrari. There’s an interesting book. He said this that laughing is medicine for the soul. Children laugh an average of 400 times a day and look how happy they are. But adults only love an average of 15 times a day, who’s happier? The philosopher William James said we don’t laugh because we are happy. We are happy because we LAUGH.

According to James, happiness is created as a result of our being active participants in the game of life, this is one of the chief kernels of his theory of happiness, the idea that happiness depends on a choice that we are able to make, regardless of our biological and social circumstances.

I welcome you to watch The Muppets video above and then be silly. Copy The Muppets and make the brinng noise with whoever you watch the video with. LAUGH

Be happy, laugh often.

Challenge Yourself – Dare to Succeed

Don’t you love it when you succeed, that sense of accomplishment when you have received recognition.

Likely when you were young your parents chose what sports or musical instruments you were going to attempt.  You had to go, they drove you to practice and they clapped and cheered at your game days or performances.

That part of your journey is past. What have you attempted lately? Do you only attempt sports, hobbies that you know you will succeed?

A few years ago I was challenged to take up jogging (not running) and I was challenged to think about doing a Marathon. Well I took the challenge but only achieved 10 kilometres fun races, and at one point I was running 14 kilometres 3 times a week.

Also a few years ago, a co-worker challenged me to swim regularly. He was a fantastic motivator, not only did encourage me but he went with me to the pool 3 times a week, or to the lake in the summer and swam RIGHT behind me.  When I would stop and hang on the edge of the pool and pant and gasp – he would arrive right behind me. keep going davie, don’t stop – doing great! And off I went knowing he was in the bubbles right behind my kicking feet. Eventually, a long eventually ( a year later)  I was doing 60 lengths at a time, and breathing properly when swimming for the first time ever in my swimming history. I was proud of what I had accomplished thanks to his encouragement.

Maybe next I will enter a contest speaking, that is something I certainly don’t have the desire for BUT worth a try, not only for myself but for someone else I hope to encourage ~ just not sure whom yet. (smile)

Now I learned two things. First it feels great to do something, and learn something new. Second, I felt good as his coach and helping him improve his swimming also. I felt some pride when he reached his goals also.  It was a double win ~ challenge someone to an experience in 2011.  You can have the fun, and memories of not only being a participant but also encouraging, motivating, cheerleading someone (your friend, your spouse) to SUCCEED at their challenge.

Curling, Yoga, Tennis, Swimming, Cooking classes, Ice Skating or Toastmasters ~ do it together and get the DOUBLE Experience.

Definitely Not Reality TV

Secret Squirrel

Image via Wikipedia

What is it about tv shows now? No attempt at all at reality and I guess the viewers don’t care.

The other night on CHUCK, the good guys hid out in the ventilation shaft again. Nice ventilation shaft, it must be 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide plus it has lighting every 3 feet. What building has ventilation shafts this huge, they all run horizontal and the covers are attached by what? Velcro? My first apartment in New Westminster wasn’t that large!

I miss the old days when tv made sense. like Secret Squirrel.
