Thank you for returning for another post in my “O Canada” category.
Canada’s national anthem is “O Canada” and I love that it’s easy to sing and when it is sung at events.
I think what I enjoy the most is when the crowd sings along with the anthem. I don’t want to be the only one singing and neither do you. LOL
While researching this post I listened to O Canada many times, and different anthem singers including Sarah McLachlan (famous Canadian singer songwriter – more than 40 million records sold)
I think the version that is my favourite remains the Nylons. (The Nylons were an a cappella group founded in 1978 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
I remember them singing “O Canada” during half time of a Grey Cup game, which is the Canadian Football league championship.
I also heard them sing it live at a concert once and I was in row 11 in the hall that evening – what a fun night that was, and of course that was how the night began – no instruments except them – the beginning and the percussion they make with their voices always makes me smile ā£
Here is a link to the Nylons singing O Canada in Ottawa on July 1st which is Canada Day, the celebration of confederation July 1, 1867.
Canada Day – The Nylons singing “O Canada” a cappella
But I digress, here are the lyrics to O Canada
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
And for fun, the Molson Fridge Commercial in which the key to a cold drink is properly singing O Canada
Thanks for joining today, I sincerely hope you enjoyed the topic today, and the Nyons singing O Canada ! – ā„ David
That video was great! I also like the Nylons version of O Canada. IT always chokes me up but the best time I remember is during the Vancouver Olympics, I was on the Skytrain when Canada scored during overtime, garnering them the gold medal. The entire train burst into O Canada spontaneously! (in various languages as well) Oh darn, just thinking about it makes me cry again!

You are welcome Jane, perhaps that could be a way for me to lose weight. If I had to sing to open the fridge each time but what song would I pick? I would have to be able to change it from time to time. I would pick L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole as in “L” is for the way you look at me………… O is for the only one I see ………… LOL David

I also love our National Anthem and am happy to sing it. I adore that our 7 year old granddaughter sings it at random times! Bernie

That is sweet Bernie. I have to wonder sometimes if young kids think the last two word in the national anthem are “play ball!”

It’s been interesting to hear how she gets the words out of order sometimes!

I like our anthem for its simplicity compared to others. And I absolutely loved the Nylons. Being from southern Ontario, I saw them many times in Toronto.

I agree wholeheartedly Krystal, it does seem simpler and it was based on a poem I think.
I would love to have seen the Nylons more in concert.
Inquiring minds are wondering which song was your favourite of the Nylons repertoire s’il vous plait?

The Lion Sleeps Tonight was very cool done a capella in their incredible style. They made everything really fun in person engaging with the crowd. Good memories!

You are right; good memories. In concert they turned the stage lights down before the TLST in sort of spooky night atmosphere. š

Frustratingly and oddly, my Internet wouldn’t let me listen to the Nylons, but played the red fridge just fine! I’ll have to return. I was happy to hear some people trying to sing O Canada who are just like me–can’t carry a tune in a bucket! I would get the buzzer sound too!

I do love our anthem. I hope they never change it as some politicians have suggested.

Thank you sincerely for commenting. I like how short our anthem is and it seems perfect as it is. For me it will always be as I know it now. _ David
