Sitting in the evening sun

Fresh rhubarb pie with lattice crust.

August 1, 2011.  I was just sitting in the back yard enjoying the quiet, calm and peace.  It seems that everyone is quietly recouping from a busy long weekend of activity.

We bbq’d salmon on pine boards, accompanied by baby potatoes, corn on the cob, and zucchini. A special mention to the home baked rhubarb pie with vanilla ice cream – mmmmmmm,

The day started really with a short excursion to Elephant Island winery in Naramata.  I must have tasted 7 wines, and finally bought a bottle but will likely head back soon to get a couple more that really were tempting, Stellaport, and Framboise. Elephant Island specializes in fruit wines, and you don’t do your tastings standing at a bar. NO! You set outside in the shade and relax, looking into the orchard all around you. They even encourage you to bring your picnic and have it in their tasting area, undoubtedly you will buy a glass of wine to enjoy, why not?

This weekend enjoyed two days of tennis, playing crib, playing Yatze, and my beautiful daughter Mandy & her handsome hub, Tyler.

It was a fine weekend, with smiles, pictures, laughter, and exercise and it was with family -the ice cream on my cake!

What do you wish you spent more time doing?

I am sure there is wonderful music now but if you don’t listen to the radio how do you stumble across it?

Since I still enjoy the music from years ago, and haven’t tired of it ~ I am bound to miss some of the great current music.  I also enjoy a lot of melody, and lyrics are important to me. If you think you know of a song that I could appreciate, pass it on 🙂

I sat writing an email a few minutes ago. In it I lamented I have not progressed consistently on my “best intentions” exercise and weight loss wise.  I am fairly certain that house party in my immediate future will not  consume calories, or dispatch any pounds; the opposite is nearly a sure bet.

Nearly everyone has a wish that they spent more time doing something, true?

Is it your fondest desire you could commute more? exercise more? read more?  sleep more? Perhaps your heart’s desire has something more to do with spending time with that person in your life that you are most connected to, especially if that included travel, or camping or motorcycle riding! (KW-that’s for you! 🙂 )

What is written in your heart? What do you wish you spent more time doing? or maybe you would like to start doing?

Wild & Wet in Mexico

Two people on the shore of the Pacific Ocean

Image via Wikipedia

Mexico wild & wet! No this is not a story about parties, and bikini contests. This is an introduction to a heartwarming rescue.

The youtube video is about 8 minutes long and story is true and touching. The story also speaks of the incredible pollution in the ocean. In fact I read today about problems at Midway.

This is the same island from the Pacific Ocean battle six months after Pearl Harbour. The battle now is not between Japanese warships and American warships. The battle now is for the birdlife. The birds on the island are on a marine expressway of plastic garbage, the adult birds regurgitate the plastic thinking it is fish to the young and the young birds are choking and dying.

Oh sorry, I digress – this youtube is about a whale also a victim of mankind but the plastic is nylon netting. See the story, exult in a real happy ending.

Don’t Lose the Wave !

An article in the newspaper (to the left is a link) reported that Canadians were becoming  less courteous on our roads.  The article suggested that people were forgetting to give the ” thank you ” wave when people were courteous letting them in, and being patient etc.

This trend must surely stem from outside our roads and from our daily lives.

Are we forgetting to be courteous in our daily interactions also? Are we forgetting the waves of recognition – the acknowledging please and thank-you we give with our open palm in the car, and by our eyes and voices in daily life.

Sadly I suspect the article may be accurate. However, I would like to believe that etiquette is not dead everywhere.  I am fortunate as it seems in this little town where I live,  the pleasantries, and manners my grandparents and parents taught me are still strong, or at least still present.

GOOD NEWS AND ACTS OF KINDNESS

There is lots of good news everywhere, even  in sports! I was watching the news last night and it showed a boy who received a baseball from one of the players at a ball game. Of course he was happy and dancing around. He was probably only about 11 years old.

After a few minutes it was noted on camera that he generously gave away the ball (he had only just danced around and showed off) to another younger boy at the same game, a stranger. The younger boy was clinging to his mom and obviously upset because he had also tried to get the baseball but he was unsuccessful. The happy news event showed the first boy give the ball away to the younger boy.

It was fortunate for the first boy that his act of kindness was noticed by the ball team as later that game he was rewarded for his act of kindness with a signed bat from the team.  What a nice real life event. 🙂

Here is another happy real life event! – I hope you have a great day!

Remember the wave.

I am a Leader but I’m not the Boss

Yoga at the Beach

The Leader is the boss, Right? It is funny that we think so, but certainly for Toastmasters I would disagree.

A good leader is part of a team,  perhaps someone that the team is looking toward for guidance, and leadership by example.

The previous Area 38 District 21 Governor certainly illustrates that principle of leadership by example.  Friendly, positive comments and encouragement and all the while she continued doing speeches from manuals and supporting clubs in her District. Last year while being involved with a Spring Conference in a leadership role, and being an Area Governor, she also achieved Distinguished Toastmaster.   My hat is off to you Jodi!

So what makes a good leader so successful?  Honesty is one area but that honesty is tempered by kindness and sensitivity.  A leader also can not be shy.

A leader must ask for what they want, the worst is that they will get a no, but more often they will obtain Yeses especially when the leader is doing more than lip service to achievement.  Leaders lead by example best, when their sleeves are rolled up and they are not averse to actual work themselves and seen working! I must work at being that example, and encourage others by my behavior.

One of the neatest ironies of success coupled with committment is that almost universally results in satisfaction and more enjoyment. The Clubs who are organized, committed, and well-run with speeches from manuals each week are also the more FUN!

The Club members and leaders envision success together, and they make a plan together, and execute the plan together.  Fun, and achievement are a direct result, and as you can imagine guests just want to join when they feel and see an organized club. Who wouldn’t want to be successful and have a enjoyable time doing so?

I am one person in a role of Leadership in Area 38 this year.  I envision success for all four clubs and that success will be the direct result of creativity and enthusiasm from everyone in all four clubs, including myself.  It all starts with a vision to succeed and all of us together making that plan to success, and following that plan.

Country Music is Jazzy! and a sideway step to the rocky 70’s !

An acquaintance of mine used to complain to me that country music was all about a guy losing his pickup truck and his horse. He knew zippo about country music obviously.

Country music covers a spectrum of sounds like no other. Whether you like pop rock, bluegrass, folk or jazz you can certain Country Music includes a sound you will like.

I can’t say I know anything about the music scene now, or even ten years ago. I just don’t pay much attention anymore but there are some names in country music even I recognize.

I think one thing about country music that I like is that it often has a sense of humor, and tries in a light-hearted way to relate to real life. Sort of.

The sounds of country are a long way from the Aerosmith, Paul McCartneryBand on the Run, Golden Earring,  many many Elton John songs of my youth (love Crocodile Rock!)

In my younger days I remember singing along with the radio to Radar Love, and Band on the Run and listening to CKLG radio in Vancouver. Those were the days of songs like Barroom Blitz, and (Sparks) This Town ain’t big enough for both of us!

Now look I’m stuck in the 70″s! Queen – One Night at the Opera; Suzi Quatro – Your Moma won’t like me!

Oh I have to get out this 70’s pop loop — let’s enjoy some country jazz with The Tractors. 🙂
